Emax-Technology

Emax - this is the idea of an advanced coal-fired power plant with optimised efficiency, economy and environmental sustainability.

The aim of the VGB Emax Power Plant Initiative is to promote a balanced fuel portfolio for European electricity generation and to foster modern power plant technologies based on hard coal and lignite taking into account both economical and environmental constraints.

Members of the Steering Committee "Emax Power Plant Initiative" are major European utilities, namely DONG Energy (Denmark), ENEL (Italy), E.ON (Germany), EDF (France), Electrabel (Belgium), EnBW (Germany), PPC (Greece), RWE (Germany), Vattenfall Nordic (Denmark) and Vattenfall Europe (Germany). VGB is the common platform to merge their efforts.

European and national R&D-programmes like THERMIE and AD700, COORETEC and KOMET 650 are accompanied and brought together under the umbrella of this committee and new projects are co-ordinated and jointly initiated.

A substantial result of current activities aiming at the development of a coal-fired power plant with an efficiency of more than 50 % is the establishment of the COMTES700-project .

A new challenge for the Emax -Steering Committee is the joint development of a European lighthouse project for a coal-fired power plant integrating reasonable facilities for CO2 -capture. This lighthouse project shall be qualified for public funding within the scope of the 7th EU Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. For this purpose the Emax -Steering Committee is co-operating with VGB's European Working Group "CO2 -Capture and Storage".
