Hamburg is an old harbour and trading city in the north of Germany located at the river Elbe, about 80 km from the North Sea and also 80 km from the Baltic Sea. Nowadays it is the second largest city of Germany with about 1.8 million inhabitants. Economically and culturally, Hamburg is also the centre of all Northern Germany. 3.5 million people live in the metropolitan region of Hamburg - for them, Hamburg is a shopping and cultural metropolis.

Hamburg has 2,302 bridges - more than Venice and Amsterdam combined. With over 90 consulates, Hamburg is second only to New York City in the world.

As a trade centre, Hamburg has always been outward-looking, and this has shaped the mentality of the inhabitants of Hamburg. Today Hamburg is a modern, vivid city with several universities (about 60.000 students). Besides the traditional trading focus Hamburg is a centre of aircraft building industries (Airbus).

Hamburg has its own international airport from which more than 120 European and intercontinental destinations can directly be reached.
