CO2 Capture and Storage
Regarding the Kyoto Protocol of 1997 the EU committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions until 2008/12 by 8% below the 1990 level. As an efficient way to reduce CO2 emissions during the combustion of fossil fuels the power plant operators for decades have been developing power plant technology taking care of continuous improvement of the efficiency associated with remarkable reductions of specific CO2 emissions.
As a further means of reducing CO2 emissions CO2 capture and storage is taken into consideration. Over the past years large numbers of research projects have been launched to examine technologies for CO2 capture and storage. Also the European Commission is funding such research projects.
VGB PowerTech e.V. is watching this development and has installed the European Working Panel „CO2 Capture and Storage“ which has compiled and documented the present knowledge in the brochure „
CO2 Capture and Storage – A VGB Report on the State of the Art
“ .
