Current Topics

The Generators Project Group maintains the damage database and conducts talks with the manufacturers to evaluate current events and discuss optimum solutions for further improvements to the operation and long-term stability of the generators. The next meeting with Alstom is planned for autumn 2010.

The new VGB Guideline R167, "Inspection Recommendations for Turbine Generators" is based on the former VDEW Recommendation of 1991. The revision takes account of the extended capabilities now available for measurement, data analysis and diagnosis to determine the condition of generators, and the current maintenance strategies in the power generation companies. In addition, notes on online monitoring for early detection of damage are presented, as this can have a favourable effect on inspection planning. Important aspects from the manufacturers' point of view were discussed in joint talks during the compilation of the guideline and opinions were coordinated.

In-process quality inspection of generators is to appear as VGB Guideline R166, describing tests and inspections during manufacture and stating VGB's recommended test methods and guideline values. Compilation is continuing.

For high-rating transformers, the focus is on monitoring opportunities and methods, and management of the ageing process. The database developed is being filled with data step by step. A data collection on the subject of online monitoring and transformer instrumentation is available. Firm statements on the scope of monitoring, possible technical solutions and test cycles for the monitoring of transformers are to be presented in a VGB Guideline.

A Project Group has been established in the WP Electrical Equipment to summarize the topic of "electrical unit protection" in a VGB Guideline. The impetus was provided by the need for modernization of the former VDEW recommendations resulting in particular from digital multifunctional protection devices and the evaluation of developments in the field of current and voltage transformers. The Guideline is to be available at the end of 2010.

Topics of significance across company boundaries were dealt with in the exchange of experience. Quality problems and damage are also to be observed critically in the electrical equipment field.

Topics at the interface to the grid will once again form a focal point in the work of the WP in the near future. A new PG has also been established to revise the requirements for motors and frequency converters.
