Guideline for the Award of the Heinrich-Mandel Prize

  1. The Board of Directors and Board of Trustees of the VGB-FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG yearly award the Heinrich-Mandel Prize endowed with 10,000 € for an outstanding achievement by young university graduates (age limit: 35 years) working in the field of power and heat generation.
The Prize was named in honour of Professor Dr. mult. Heinrich Mandel, whose life work was trend-setting for the design, construction, and operation of power plants and was established in 1980 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the VGB PowerTech e. V. The work that is to be honoured in this way can relate either to new findings in the operation of power and heat generation plants, or to important research results.
  2. The Prize consists of a certificate which is signed by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the VGB-FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG, the Science Representative acting as a member of the Board of Trustees, and the Managing Director of the VGB-FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG, along with the amount of money mentioned above.
In the case of equal achievements, the Prize may be divided among several candidates. If no Prize-worthy works are proposed, the awarding of the Prize can be postponed for one or more years.
  3. The right for proposal is shared by all VGB members and the members of the Scientific Advisory Board of VGB.
Those making nominations submit a justification of the nomination along with supporting documentation to the VGB-FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG by 30th April of any given year . The achievements on which the nomination is based must have been proved by at least one publication or at least one public lecture by the end of the calendar year preceding the nomination. A thesis is not considered a publication.
  4. The examination and decision on the Prize-worthiness is in the responsibility of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors of the VGB-FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG, who can consult other experts. The decision is final and allows no appeal. The Prize can be awarded to any given person only once. Exceptions are possible only by unanimous resolution of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors of the VGB-FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG.
  5. The Prize is awarded by the Chairman of the VGB Board of Directors on the occasion of the VGB Congress associated with the annual general assembly of VGB members. As a rule, the Prize-winner(s) should report on the results of the work for which the Prize is awarded within the context of a VGB event or in the VGB technical journal.
