Crowning a hilltop and corseted with ramparts which confine narrow streets and centuries old houses, Perouges was originally constructed prior to the roman occupation, by an Italian colony from Perugia
(Perouse). During the Middle Ages and until the French annexation in 1601, the lords of Dauphiné and Savoy disputed its sovereignty. The siege in 168 remains, even today famous in military annals.

In the city, rich and thriving, hundreds of weavers were employed using the hemp grown nearby. At the beginning of the 19th century, this property disappeared. Perouges was far away from the railroad and the artisan workforce was unable to meet the competition of the factories. The population of 1500 in prosperous days had fallen to 90 by the beginning of this century and looked at one time of disappearing altogether. Many properties disappeared in a wave of destruction. Happily, thanks to the intervention of past lyonnaise friends, several Perougians artists and les Beaux-Arts, the most interesting houses were purchased, tastefully restored and classed as national monument.
