Advantages and Limitations of Biomass Co-combustion in Fossil Fired Power Plants
Co-combustion of biomass is an important technology for CO2-neutral electricity generation. In many countries biomass co-combustion is one of the most economic ways to save CO2. In addition it can be motivated by saving of CO2 taxes. Co-combustion of biomass is practiced in numerous plants, especially in Denmark, Belgium, The Netherlands, Poland, Italy and United Kingdom.

VGB/EURELECTRIC recommendations "European Wide Sector Specific Calculation Method for Reporting to the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register"
According to the „Regulation (EC) No. 166/2006 concerning the establishment of a European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register ...” emissions of certain pollutants - above fixed threshold values - from industrial installations, also from power plants, have to be reported. The emissions have to be reported annually, for the first time in 2008 for the reporting year 2007.

Literature Research “Climate Change and the Power Industry”
For decades, the power industry has been concerning itself with the climate change. The first time that the working group "CO2 and the Climate" researched the literature about this topic was as early as at the end of the 1980s. Owing to the constantly growing scientific findings, in 1991 and in 1995 updates of this literature research were made. Yet, this topic has become ever more important, and a new update was urgently required.

Integrity Concept for Piping System with Corresponding Leak and Break Postulates in German Nuclear Power Plants
In order to continuously guarantee the component integrity of light water reactors during operation the ”leak-before-break concept” is applied in Germany. This has been developed in the past 25 years on the basis of the safety criteria of the guidelines for damage precaution, of the German Reactor Safety Commission guidelines (RSK-LL) and the basis safety concept. The present paper will demonstrate that the German ”leak-before-break concept” has been proven successfully for the last 25 years and reflects the state of the art of science and technology.

EURELECTRIC HOLDS ROLE OF ELECTRICITY WORKSHOPS
Successful workshops were held on the demand and supply parts of EURELECTRIC’s Role of Electricity Project on 20-22 November in Brussels, confirming the importance of competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply, and analysing the contribution that electricity can make to these three key energy drivers. The demand-side workshop highlighted the significant potential for energy savings through technological innovation and the importance of new applications of electricity. In the second workshop, preliminary results of the supply-side part of the Role of Electricity project were presented, after a discussion on the prospects of global fuel supply.

VGB Quality Award Granted for the First Time
n 27th September 2006 the “VGB Quality Award” was granted for the first time on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the VGB Congress “Power Plants 2006” in Dresden. Quality is a pre-condition for the successful implementation of projects. According to our members´ response it seems that it is often easier to furnish examples of poor than of high quality.
Therefore, we are pleased that we received five outstanding examples that had been nominated for the “VGB Quality Award”. The VGB body that assessed the nominees found out that the projects nominated were all very close together, however, one project was ahead:
The winner of the first “VGB Quality Award” is the project “Partial Renewal of the FGD of the Voerde Power Plant, Unit A/B”. The professionalism and personal engagement of the project leader
Dipl.-Ing. Peter Errenst, DSD Hilgers Stahlbau, contributed to the successful implementation of the project.
