1) VGB Congress Power Plants 2010: Energy Must be Secure, Environmentally Compatible and Economically Efficient

"Renewables, Nuclear, Coal and Gas - Technologies for a Low-carbon Future". This was the slogan of the VGB Congress "Power
Plants 2010", which took place with more than 1.300 participants from
30 nations in Essen/Germany on September 22 - 24, 2010.

The Congress participants, who came from all over the world, had the opportunity to discuss within the scope of the comprehensive Congress programme the future of electricity supply that will have to take into account and implement the ambitious requirements of society and politics. The focus is on the massive extension of renewable sources of energy and the implementation of possibly CO2-free electricity generation.

2) GDF SUEZ and Solar Power Group will Develop a Concentrated Solar Power Project in Chile

GDF SUEZ and Solar Power Group have agreed to jointly develop a 5 MW thermal Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant which will supply superheated steam to the Mejillones coal-fired plant (150 MW) in the North of Chile. The Chilean project consists of a solar boiler and its connection to the coal fired power plant. The solar boiler, that produces super-heated steam, is constituted of modules developed by Solar Power Group using its Fresnel technology.

3) Heinrich-Mandel Prize 2010 for Florian Mura

The VGB Research Foundation awarded the Heinrich-Mandel Prize 2010 to Florian Mura, E.ON Energy Research Center, Aachen, for the analysis of a gas turbine system, which can be operated at optimized speed disregard of the load conditions set by the net frequency. The 10,000 Euro prize was handed over by the VGB chairman on the occasion of the VGB Congress "Power Plants 2010" on September 22, 2010, in Essen/Germany.

4) VGB Quality Award 2010 for Alstom Power Service GmbH

On the occasion of the opening ceremony of the VGB Congress POWER PLANTS in Essen on September 22, 2010, the VGB Quality Award was rewarded for the fifth time. Lutz Fongern received the prize for the Alstom Power Service GmbH for the outstanding quality of the revision of the 500 MW turbines of the blocks C and D in the lignite power station Jaenschwalde.

5) Electricity Generation - Facts and Figures 2010/2011

The information brochure "Electricity Generation - Facts and Figures" had been published by VGB for the first time in 2003. This flyer is intended to inform you at annual intervals about latest developments in power generation. The new edition is available for download now.

6) VGB-R613 "Guideline for Life Time Management of Reinforced Concrete Cooling Towers in Power Plants"

The new guideline deals with the life time management of power plant cooling towers. The main request is the maintenance concerning measures to ensure the safety of a cooling tower. The life time management already starts with the planning resp. erection of a cooling tower and is being continued during the whole service life.
For the planning and execution of necessary maintenance measures it is recommended to use a cooling tower book. The guideline contains specimen sheets for such a book.

7) VGB-TW103Ve "Availability of Thermal Power Plants"

The Technical-scientific Report "Availability of Thermal Power Plants" for the period 2000 to 2009 can be bought now. The report analyses 567 power plant units with a total capacity of 232,000 MW.
