City Tour Cologne

Experience and gain an insight into the fourth biggest metropolis of Germany. Cologne, a city with a fascinating history, and a Catholic idyll. Visit the most beautiful sights around Cologne Cathedral. Meet God and meet the world in the Cathedral, a building of High Gothic architecture, commenced in the year 1248 but not completed until the year 1880. On your "circular tour", you will be given an understanding of the typical Cologne way of living by way of anecdotes.

Cologne Design Tour

This tour will lead you away from the centre of the city at first, into one of the cosy quarters of the city. Here, you will be welcomed at the "Atelierhof" ("Studio Yard") by three Cologne designers who know their job and trade. Whatever you are looking for, a hat made of felt, a goldworking individually made for your hand, or the new handmade ceramic set. In between, you will be served a "brunch piccolomino". A glass of Prosecco will refresh you for the further course of the tour. Shopping, shopping, shopping in the centre of the city. Be inspired by the creativity and uniqueness of the Cologne designers.

Witch Cult Tour

Witches and heretics, superstition and "sanctimonious" piousness will be explained from a historical perspective on this guided tour. The evil and the devil are part of the Creation, and the eternal struggle against the devil took place in all areas, also in the building of the Cathedral where the interior of the church is immersed into a mystic light by its colourful glass windows and thus creating a spiritual atmosphere. Thereafter, you will pass by the Animal Fountain, cross the Heinrich Böll Square and go on to the Cathedral, and the "Seidenmacherinnengässchen" ("Silk Maker Alley") is also known for its exiting history.

Around Cologne

From Cologne to Bonn, it’s only stone’s throw to the former capital of the Federal Republic of Germany which has still to offer quite a lot. The romantic Minster, Beethoven’s birth house, the time-honoured "Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelm University" are reminiscences of old and (almost) most recent German history. A small tour of the town centre of Bonn with a visit of the Minster and of Beethoven’s House will make you a bit more familiar with the town. Then, the tour will lead you into one of the hearts of the romantic valley of the river Rhine (World Heritage of UNESCO), the Siebengebirge, a scene of numerous legends and myths. One of the oldest aerial ropeways in Germany will take up to the top of the Drachenfels. After a small snack, you will be brought back to Cologne again.

Minimum number of participants: 25 persons
Price: € 75.00 per person

Cologne Gourmet Tour

By train, you will go to the "Hahnentor". Here, the question as to why Napoleon Bonaparte was in a way also been a promoter of the typical Cologne gastronomy will already be clarified. Thereafter, the tour will continue via three "gourmet stops" to the so-called Roman Tower giving cause to inform about the Roman cuisine, then to the "Zeughaus"(Arsenal) and the Castle Wall up to Cologne Cathedral. Here, you will learn why the Cologne cuisine was scarcely able to get around international popularity. Via Marzellenstraße and the hidden Ursula Square, the tour will lead you via two additional gourmet stops to the legendary "Eigelstein". How the "cabbage peasants" gathered wealth and what role the peasant has been playing in the carnival of Cologne, that are the things you will be informed about on this Gourmet Tour. At selected speciality shops, you will be served little snacks.

You will be told why it took so long to built the Cologne Cathedral, why there is a huge hole to be seen right in the centre of the city, and why you are always going around in circles when driving through the city of Cologne. The next very special cultural stop is the Cologne Beer Museum. Experience a tour of the Museum with plenty of small anecdotes and facts in respect of one of the most famous products of the city of Cologne: Kölsch (Cologne) beer. Technical Visits

TB 1 October 8, 2004 2.30 p.m. - 15.00 p.m.
BoA Power Plant (Lignite-Fired Power Plant with Optimised Plant Design) in Niederaußem

Lignite accounts for a portion of about 25 percent of the overall power generation in Germany. A lignitebased generation of power makes high demands on the efficiency of the power plants as to climate aspects. An excellent example for their technical efficiency is the BoA Power Plant (lignite-fired power plant with optimised plant design) put into operation by RWE Power in Bergheim-Niederaußem (Rhein-Erft district) in 2002. With an efficiency of more than 43 percent, it has been setting the standard world-wide. Compared to older plants, the lignite-fired power plant with optimised plant design has been reducing CO2 emissions by up to three million tonnes a year - an active contribution to the preservation of the environment and the climate world-wide.

Meeting place: 1.45 p.m. Hotel Maritim Cologne/return approx. 5.45 p.m.
Minimum number of participants: 25 persons - max. 100 persons
Price: € 25.00 per person

TB 2 October 8, 2004 2.30 p.m. - 15.00 p.m.
Tour of the Open Cast Mine Garzweiler

In the lignite mining area of the Rhine region between Cologne, Aachen and Mönchengladbach, three open cast mines of RWE Power are delivering about 100 million tonnes of lignite per year, being used at a rate of 90 percent for power generation at power plants of the company that are situated close to the open cast mines. The most northern coal mine is the open cast mine Garzweiler, west of Grevenbroich (Rhine district Neuss). In depths of up to 160 meters, bucket wheel excavators are extracting the energy raw material being accumulated there in three layers. With the aim of ensuring energy supply, the mining district Garzweiler I will be extended as of the year 2006 to the west to the mining district Garzweiler II and shall ensure about 40 percent of the lignite mining in the Rhine region up to the year 2044.

Meeting place: 1.45 p.m. Hotel Maritim Cologne /return approx. 5.45 p.m. Grevenbroich
Minimum number of participants: 25 persons - max. 50 persons

TB 4 October 8, 2004 2.00 p.m. - 14.00 p.m.
Tour of the Gas and Steam Turbine Thermal Power Plant of GEW RheinEnergie AG in Cologne-Niehl

GEW RheinEnergie AG is presently establishing a highly modern thermal power plant on the basis of gas and steam turbine technology at the location of Cologne-Niehl. The plant will replace an about 30 year old duo power plant block on the basis of natural gas. The new power plant will be the core of the electric power

and thermal power generation for the city of Cologne. It will cover the major part of the demand of the centre of the city of Cologne and of the quarter of Deutz on a long-term basis. The heart of the plant will be a gas turbo set (type V94.3A) of Siemens with a power output of about 260 megawatts. The total electric power output will be 400 megawatts; the net efficiency will be more than 58 percent. In case of a steam turbine operation, a district heating output of a maximum of 265 megawatts will additionally be available. Before this background, the efficiency degree of the whole plant will be increased to more than 86 percent. The plant will be put into operation in autumn 2004.

Meeting place: TB 3 9 a.m. Hotel Maritim Cologne/return approx. 1 p.m.
Meeting place: TB 4 1.30 p.m. Hotel Maritim Cologne/ return approx. 4.30 p.m.
