Salt – “white gold” – for centuries the most important means of payment in Poland. The source of this “gold” can be found 10 km east of Cracow. Many of the shafts and chambers you pass through have been decorated with wonderful sculptures carved into the salt. This mine is also the home of the friendly spirit “The Treasurer“, perhaps you will meet him if you descend as for as the shaft bottom III (135 m below ground). Misterious underground lakes, spiral staircases, bridges, light refracting the salt crystals, the exquisitely gleaming sculptures and reliefs draw you into a fascinating fantasy world of make-believe. Experienced former miners guide you safely through the labyrinth. In 1978 the Wieliczka Salt Mine was entered in the UNESCO World Cultural and National Heritage List. Please wear sturdy shoes.

Approximately 60 km to the west of Cracow lies the town of Oswiecim (Auschwitz) with roughly 50,000 inhabitants where it is hardly reconstructable what appened there 60 years ago. First the concentration camp itself and then the museum bring the past to life again. The guided tour starts with a film that was shot in 1945 after the camp was liberated. The camp has been kept entirely as it was with its 40 two-storey stone buildings, its gas chamber and crematorium, the gallows, the Death Wall and some of the barrakks. You may also visit the Auschwitz II – Birkenau site, which between 1942 and 1945 was the main site of the executions. The complete site of the former concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was entered in the World Cultural and National Heritage List by UNESCO in 1979.

When visiting the Jasna Gora cloister you pass through the main entrance into the Basilica of the Holy Cross and the Birth of Mary. Fires, destruction and reconstructions have altered the church time and again. The church is magnificent in its decorations and full of light. Even the late-baroque main altar from the years 1725 - 1728, which illustrates the assumption into heaven of the Virgin Mary, glows in gleaming white light. In the left wing of the basilica there is an altar with the image of the Black Madonna (1650). In addition you may visit the treasure chamber of the cloister – built in the years 1649 - 1653 – and the armory with a collection of historical weapons and military votive gifts. The museum dedicated to its 600 years’ existence houses valuable artefacts that tell the history of the Pauline Friars. On the way back you can view limestone cliffs, ruins and castles from the Middle Ages.

In the year 1960 coal was discovered in the Belchatów region (the estimated amount: 2.000.000.000 tonnes). In 1975 it was decided to extract the coal, initial work commenced five years later. The first block was put into operation in 1980. Full capacity was reached in 1988. Belchatow is the largest power station that is fired with brown coal. The installed power amounts to 15% of the installed energy in Poland and produces 20% of the total energy supply. It is the cheapest energy supply in Poland. There are six installations for the removal of sulphur from the flue gases (IOS) (target is 8). This fulfils all the standards and requirements for the protection of the environment. The Belchatów power station blocks operate in the country’s power supply system. The national energy configuration (KDM), within the requency and system energy regulations, sends target output signals for power to each of the blocks – between 290 - 360 MW. From May 2000 in addition to PSE (grid perator) the Belchatów current will also supplied to five power distributors from the West group and Stoen. During the guided tour the participants will also have the pportunity not only to see the most important departments but also to discuss important problems regarding the nature of Polish power generation in Poland during a meeting with plant managers. This power station is of decisive importance for Cracow. It is the first private power station in Poland. Power and heating are produced from four power blocks and five heating boilers. Power and heat are passed through four water pipes of hot water to the consumer. Electrical power is supplied to the grid operators such as PSE and local suppliers in Cracow. The installed heating power amounts to 1397 MW and energy power to 460 MW. The district heating covers 60 % of requirements in Cracow. The power and district heating plant runs on hard coal. The annual consumption of coal is 1,200,000 t.

Porabka-Zar is the second largest hydro power plant in Poland. The pumped storage plant power station was commissioned in 1979. Following modernisation in 1998, it now has a power capacity of 500 MW installed power. The pumped storage plant has two water reservoirs, the reservoir in Miedzybrodzie (below) and the artificial lake on the Zar mountain (above). The power station has four identical machine units each with 125 MW by turbine operation and 135 MW with pump operation. The complete control system has been automated. In 1949 the Politburo made the decision to found the first socialist city in Poland. 10 km east of Cracow a “drawing board city“ was founded. At the same time, the largest (until 1976) steelworks in Poland was constructed. At the end of the 70s, more than 35,000 people were employed at the steelworks. This tour gives you the opportunity not only to visit the socialist city but also the steelworks. During the guided tour you will visit both the oldest and the newest departments such as the modern facilities for cold steel roll. You will also have the opportunity to speak with specialists about the current economic problems. The history of this quarter is an excellent example of the modern history of Cracow and Poland.
