1) European Scientists Recommend Urgent Endeavours for Resource- and Environmentally Friendly Power Generation

The Scientific Advisory Board of VGB PowerTech comprised of 30 professors for power generation technologies from eight European countries has compiled its view of the current European power supply situation and its concerns and recommendations for future research requirements in this field in a new report. The experts from all fields of power generation assess developments and provide detailed recommendations for a resource- and environmentally gentle power production and its rearrangement towards a maximum of CO2-saving production technologies.

2) RWE Innogy and Topell Energy Build Plant for the Production of Biocoal Pellets

RWE Innogy and Topell Energy layed the foundation stone at Duiven in the Dutch province of Gelderland for the first commercial-scale plant for the production of biocoal pellets. The plant has a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year.
The process developed by Topell enables the continuous production of biocoal pellets on an industrial scale. The manufacturing process is highly flexible in terms of raw material input. Biocoal is easily transported. When co-fired with conventional coal, no additional infrastructural measures are required, such as separate storage and pulverisation.
RWE's Dutch subsidiary Essent will be the first company to use the biocoal pellets over a period of five years for combustion in the Amer coal-fired power plants. Significant CO2 reductions can be achieved by replacing fossil energy sources by biomass.

3) VGB/EURELECTRIC Recommendations "European Wide Sector Specific Calculation Method for Reporting to the E-PRTR" Revised

According to the "Regulation (EC) No. 166/2006 concerning the
establishment of a European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register ..." emissions of certain pollutants from industrial installations, also from power plants, have to be reported.

On behalf of EURELECTRIC the VGB European Working Group E-PRTR has
compiled in 2008 the recommendations "European Wide Sector Specific
Calculation Method for Reporting to the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register". The document sets out a calculation method for the emissions, including emission factors.

4) Generating Excellence in Power Generation - Kick-off Workshop of the Excellence Enhancement Centre

In the kick-off workshop of the Excellence Enhancement Centre (EEC) a Memorandum of Understanding between the Indian Central Electricity Authority and VGB PowerTech was signed. Both organisations commit themselves to foster the set up and the operation of the EEC by sharing best practices from India and Germany. The objective of the EEC is to facilitate performance improvements in Indian power sector, especially with respect to efficiency and reliability. The EEC is one of the first projects which has been initiated and funded under the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF).

5) VGB Workshop "Flue Gas Cleaning 2010"

The VGB Workshop "Flue Gas Cleaning 2010" on May 26/27, 2010, in Prague has also found great interest in this year. There were welcomed over 100 participants from 21 countries.
The pictures of the workshop can be downloaded from the VGB website. For the participants of the workshop an update of the presentations is available for download. Access data can be requested from Ines Moors or Andreas Wecker.
