EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG has officially taken the first commercial offshore windfarm in Germany into operation on May 2, 2011. EnBW gained the Baltic 1 project in March 2008. The symbolic foundation stone was laid in spring 2010. Almost three years after the start 21 wind power plants and the substation platform have been installed in the Baltic Sea; 16 kilometres from the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern coastline. Each turbine has an installed capacity of 2.3 MW; together they achieve 48.3 MW. The construction of the six times larger offshore windfarm project EnBW Baltic 2 will probably start in 2012.
