The German Energy Agency (dena) published the objectives of the dena Grid Study II. The study aims to develop a long term plan for the integration of renewable energy sources, and particularly wind energy, into the German power grid, developing solutions to be expected before 2020/25. VGB is member of the project steering group.

The Board of Trustees of the VGB-FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG equally granted the Heinrich-Mandel Prize for Power Plant Technology 2007 to Dr. Lydia-Emilia Fryda and to Dr. Jens Hampel. Lydia-Emilia Fryda (31) was awarded for her works on the utilisation of biomass in decentral electricity generation plants < 1 MWel with fluidised bed gasification and oxide ceramic fuel cells. Jens Hampel (34) was honoured for the development of a turbo generator with mechatronic link to the electrical grid for increasing the efficiency of smaller steam turbines.
The 10,000 Euro prize was handed over by the VGB chairman on the occasion of the VGB Congress "Power Plants 2007" in Salzburg, on September 19, 2007.

The technical scientific report "Analysis of Unavailability of Thermal Power Plants" is for the operation decade 1997-2006 (pdf file) on November 12, 2007 available in the German and English languages. The report provides information about weak points of equipment and power plant systems. VGB is analysing the annual unavailability (UA analysis) in order to identify the root causes, i.e. those systems causing unavailability to be able to upgrade such weak equipment. The systems and equipment to be analysed are specified according to the KKS power plant identification system.
