1) Heinrich-Mandel Prize 2005 for Dirk Schettler

Dr. Dirk Schettler was awarded with the Heinrich-Mandel Prize for power plant technology on the occasion of the VGB Congress 2005 in Krakau. 33-year old engineer received the VGB Research Foundation award for online recording of high-temperature corrosion of boiler tube materials.

2) Offshore Foundation Established

To foster the expansion of wind energy, the German economy established a foundation for the use and research of offshore wind energy (Offshore-Stiftung). An innovative test field is to be set up outside the island Borkum in the North Sea. The test field is expected to give impulses for offshore wind energy and to create ideal conditions for advancing the 5 MW technology of future wind turbines.

3) CO2 capture and storage

The 1st International Workshop on CSLF (Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum) projects took place in Potsdam on 29. September 2005. It was reported on actual research projects (e.g. ENCAP, CASTOR, CO2STORE, CO2Sink, CO2GeoNet etc.) and on new technical developments, e.g. membranes for CO2 capture from pressurized flue gas and micro-scale gas turbines for CO2. Conference documents can be downloaded from the CSLF website.

4) Results of the IAEO General Conference

Essential result of the 49th IAEO general conference from the 26th to the 30th of September, 2005, in Vienna with more than 100 participant states was the adoption of the North Korea resolution on nuclear issues including the implementation of safeguards in this state as well as the resolution on the application of the IAEO safeguards in states of the Middle East.

Central subject of the conference was the strengthening of the non-proliferation regime. The worldwide nuclear power expansion on the one hand and the serious proliferation risks and security threats on the other hand, would make it necessary to improve the IAEO safeguards abilities as well as a dissemination stop of sensitive nuclear fuel cycle activities.
