3) Research Project "Pressurized Gas Scrubbing for CO2 from Flue Gas by Membrane Contactors" Completed
In June, 2010 a draft final report on the status of implementation of mercury reduction measures in the EU was published. In this report, it was found that in particular the implementation of IPPC and LCP Directives have not reduced the mercury emissions as provided. It was therefore recommended that the Industrial Emissions Directive, in conjunction with the application of Best Available Technology (BAT) as soon as possible have to be implemented and furthermore possible limits on mercury emissions have to be defined.
EURELECTRIC and VGB have prepared a common statement on the report.

The research project "Improvement of Pressurized Gas Scrubbing for CO2 from Flue Gas by Membrane Contactors and Simulation of Optimized Efficiency in Power Plant Processes with Postcombustion Decarbonization" was successfully completed.
Membrane contactors have been shown in principle to be suitable for use during the CO2-gas scrubbing. Their high flexibility in the L/G ratio as well as operational reliability was demonstrated. However, further development work in particular with regard to the selection of the membrane and also the modular design is necessary.
