1) VGB Congress Power Plants 2011: European Electricity Generation is Facing Technical Challenges

"European Generation Mix – High Demand for Flexibility and Storage". This was the slogan of the VGB Congress "Power Plants 2011", which took place with more than 1.100 participants from 28 nations in Berne/Switzerland on September 21 - 23, 2011.

Following the ambitious targets of the European environmental and energy policy, more action has to be taken to reduce CO2 emissions and to increase the share of renewables. Consequently, the construction of wind-, biomass-fired and solar power plants, nuclear power plants and state-of-the-art fossil-fired power stations is being pushed.

2) Heinrich-Mandel Prize 2011 for Sebastian Meinke and Christian Ziems

The VGB Research Foundation awarded the Heinrich-Mandel Prize 2011 to Sebastian Meinke and Christian Ziems, University of Rostock, for the analysis of the effect on conventional power plants of increasing intermitting power supply by renewables. The 10,000 Euro prize was handed over by the VGB chairman on the occasion of the VGB Congress "Power Plants 2011" on September 21, 2011, in Berne/Switzerland.

5) VGB European Occupational Health and Safety Conference September 2011, Stockholm

The occupational health and safety has moved very strongly in the last years to the centre of attention. First more on a national level, but now more and more with an international approach. With this conference the ETC "Safety and Health at Work" has contributed to an increasing health and safety performance in the electricity generating industry.

The conference has pointed out developments, tendencies and possible solutions, to intensify the discussions and to improve the occupational safety and health for all partners involved.

The main items of the conference:
- Learning from accidents and incidents
- From lagging to leading indicators
- Contractor safety management & engagement
- Impact, interface and overlap of process safety and on occ. H&S
- How to implement H&S in the business planning process
- The impact of electric power generation on public health issues
- European legislation for hazardous materials and
- New health and safety challenges in the offshore wind business

7) VGB-TW103Ae "Analysis of Unavailability of Thermal Power Plants"

The Technical-scientific Report "Analysis of Unavailability of Thermal Power Plants" for the operation decade 2001-2010 (pdf file) is available in the German and English languages. The report provides information about weak points of equipment and power plant systems. VGB is analysing the annual unavailability (UA analysis) in order to identify the root causes, i.e. those systems causing unavailability, to be able to upgrade such weak equipment. The systems and equipment to be analysed are specified according to the KKS power plant identification system. Receive free of charge an outline of the report via e-mail:
