VGB Innovation Award 2016

The Board of Trustees of the VGB-FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG awarded the VGB Innovation Award 2016 to

  • Josef Langen (33) for further development of measuring systems for online measurement of fireside corrosion of evaporator walls.

Changing fuel types, co-firing of secondary fuels, and cycling operation are challenging the steam boiler of large combustion plants by significant increased corrosion attacks. Josef Langen worked on the development of online corrosion probes for the use in lignite- and hard coal-fired power plants.

By means of electro-chemical measuring methods, fireside corrosion attacks can be determined in a time-resolved manner. For this purpose corrosion probes cooled below of 500°C are placed in the combustion chamber. An essential improvement are passively cooled membrane wall sensors that are integrated into the evaporator walls. This type sensors can be implemented outside of the evaporator wall during short standstills of the boiler allowing a much more flexible and continuous application of corrosion measurements at any convenient place. The newly developed measuring system allows to investigate the impact of operational parameters on the corrosion attacks.

The VGB Innovation Award, endowed with a total of 10,000 €, was handed over by the VGB chairman on the occasion of the VGB Congress "Power Plants 2016" in Leipzig, Germany, on 21 September 2016.
