Many power plant components are subject to certain changes of characteristics during their operation, restricting their service life.

Boiler Tubes

Investigation of boiler tubes is effected by means of tube samples with regard to:
  • corrosion processes on the external surface,
  • magnetite protective coating on the internal surface,
  • possible changes of structure of the tube material.

Under due consideration of these investigation results, estimation of the temporal wall thickness loss since commissioning is applied to calculate the expected service life termination of the tubes.

Tubework

Design of the life steam and hot reheater line is generally as per time-dependent strength parameters. As per TRD 508 and VGB Guideline "R 509 L - Wiederkehrende Prüfungen an Rohrleitungsanlagen in fossilbefeuerten Wärmekraftwerken (only available in German)", upon reaching an overall fatigue of 60 % and/or a service life of 100,000 h, random sample testing of highly stressed components has to be taken up.

VGB Materials Laboratory services do cover all individual steps from creating the test plan via realising all necessary testes up to control-calculation of all components with the actual dimensions and final evaluation of the tubework.
