VGB Innovation Award 2019 - Submit your proposal now!

  • New: Two categories

The VGB Research Foundation awards outstanding performance of young university graduates or professionals (age limit: 35 years). Eligible work can relate either to innovation in the operation of plants for generation and storage of power and heat, or to new findings in research.

The VGB Innovation Award is endowed with in total 10,000 €. For the first time, it is awarded in the two categories "application-oriented" and "future-oriented" with different evaluation criteria.

Reward outstanding performance and propose - as VGB member or member of the VGB Scientific Advisory Board - promising candidates now.

NEWS

ESB Electricity Supply Board operates benchmark

The ordinary member ESB is now participating in the VGB power plant information system KISSY and will use the opportunity to compare itself with a pool of international power plants. The ESB power plant fleet, distributed in 10 sites, includes thermal power plants as well as a pumped storage plant. By recording availability data and unavailability incidents, technical parameters are calculated and weak points of plant systems can be identified.

Through the participation of ESB, the pool will increase to around 670 power plant units plus 178 machine sets from pumped storage and storage power plants in KISSY.

Water-steam cycle Experts wanted

The flexibilisation of plant operation also has an influence on the operation of the water-steam cycle. This should be taken into account in the revision of VGB-S-010: Feedwater, boiler water and steam quality for power plants / industrial power plants.

We are therefore looking for experts who would like to participate in the revision. It is expected to start in the middle of the year.

VGB's German Pavilion of nuclear industry in Turkey

For the third time, VGB PowerTech coordinated a joint booth (German Pavilion) to support German-speaking countries' nuclear industry at the NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS II. EXPO & VI. SUMMIT in Istanbul, Turkey.

This annual conference and exhibition event supports and promotes the emerging Turkish nuclear market for design, construction and upcoming operation of a number of nuclear units including Turkey's first nuclear power station.

This had been a further event within VGB's initiative EFENDI External promotion of German nuclear industry's exports of nuclear commodities.

PowerJobs: Current vacancies

The VGB Job Market is offering prospective persons the possibility to develop their career in power and heat generation. You can find current vacancies on our homepage.

RESEARCH

Simulation model to improve the fuel distribution of furnaces combusting herbaceous biomass

Increased use of herbaceous biomass is becoming increasingly important. As a renewable energy source, this can help reduce CO2 emissions and, in the case of straw, is an agricultural by-product, meaning that there is no competition to food production. With the increasing spread of energetic straw use, the optimization of the transport of herbaceous biomass becomes more and more relevant.

A well-suited method for transport is the pneumatic conveying, which is already used in some straw burning units. A sub-optimal operation of pneumatic conveying can lead to malfunction and increased operating costs. Currently available design diagrams, calculation approaches and recommendations are insufficiently suitable for herbaceous biomass. The focus of the new project 418 is therefore on the experimental and numerical investigation of the pneumatic transport of herbaceous biomass. Aim is to make a concrete contribution to the optimization of its transport.

VGB-S-017-00-2018-09-EN - Fire Protection in Onshore Wind Turbines – Now available as eBook!

Fire-fighting operations by fire brigades in onshore wind turbines are almost impossible because of their height and resulting difficulty of accessing them. For this reason, fire prevention, early detection and fighting of a fire, and the self-rescue of persons present in the installations during a fire are key considerations.
