VGB PowerTech offers its Ordinary Members (energy plant operators) exclusive online access to its entire digital standards (VGB-Standards, VGB-Guidelines, VGB Instruction Sheets) via the online data base VGBVS4OM.

The portal has now been extended by the "Technical-Scientific" (TW) reports under the category "Books". Currently the VGB-TW-530, "Empfehlungen zum Betrieb und zur Überwachung von Kesselumwälzpumpen - Basierend auf den umfangreichen Nachuntersuchungen zum Schadensereignis 2014" (Recommendations for Operation and Monitoring of Boiler Recirculation Pumps - Based on the follow-up review of the 2014 damage event)is published. The English edition will be available soon.

Experts gather to define research and innovation priorities for the future of Europe’s Hydropower industry

On 25 March 2020, HYDROPOWER EUROPE invited experts from the hydropower industry to participate in the Second Expert Panel Consultation to define a common Research and innovation Agenda and Strategic Industry Roadmap.

VGB Innovation Award 2020 - Submit your proposal now!

The VGB Research Foundation awards outstanding performance of young university graduates or professionals (age limit: 35 years). Eligible work can relate either to innovation in the operation of plants for generation and storage of power and heat, or to new findings in research.

The VGB Innovation Award is endowed with in total 10,000 €. Since 2019, it is awarded in the two categories "application-oriented" and "future-oriented" with different evaluation criteria.

The masks can be ordered in the VGB Online Shop with a minimum order quantity of 100 pcs.

VGB will extend its offer, if there is an additional need for protective equipment.

For individual inquiries regarding larger quantities or further PPE products please contact us by e-mail mark@vgb.org.

Keep safe and stay healthy!

Proof of the environmental compatibility of fly ash and bottom ash - Implementation of the requirements of the MVV TB (and ABuG) after April 2020

For the application of fly ash or bottom ash in concrete the proof of the environmental compatibility is currently provided by national approvals (abZ) of the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt). These approvals will lose their validity in April 2020 and can no longer be extended. The amendment results from the judgement against the Federal Republic of Germany (ECJ judgement in case C-100/13 of 16 October 2014) and resulted in a change in the building code, here specifically in the Model Administrative Provisions - Technical Building Rules (MVV TB) and the Requirements for Constructions (ABuG), which regulate the existing requirements for building materials.

To implement the requirements of MVV TB, a guideline of the German Committee for Reinforced Concrete (DAfStb) was prepared. The guideline regulates the type and scope of internal and external conformity evaluation and the handling of single value exceedances. It is currently being notified to the European Commission, but can already be applied.

For the conversion to the requirements of MVV TB / ABuG a project group of the VGB Technical Group Power Plant By-products has prepared a members' information on the "Proof of Environmental Compatibility of Fly Ash and Bottom Ash - MVV TB / ABuG and Implementation of Requirements after April 2020" as well as "Notes on the Conversion of Monitoring and Labelling for Fly Ash according to DIN EN 450-1", which will be provided when requested from the secretariat.

VGB-S-002-01-2019-05-EN - Basic Terms of the Electric Utility Industry - Now available as free of charge eBook!

As a result of the now almost global energy transition and the associated requirements for the ever-increasing regulation of the markets while securing competition, the number of terms used and their definitions continues to increase. In addition to the influence of market and stock market concepts, network concepts are increasingly influencing the daily work of electricity producers, dealers, analysts and other market participants. At the same time, the processing of official and association-related inquiries requires a clear understanding of the contents of the terms used.

Apart from the familiar content relating to

  • structural terms in the industry,
  • power plant, grid and integrated supply system terms,
  • energy and capacity terms and
  • terms from the stock exchanges and trading markets
now also newer terms from the energy transition and the global initiative to phase out fossil energy sources are considered.

VGB provides energy-related reading material in the home office

As a consequence of the corona-conditioned restrictions also in the daily work routine, a large number of employees in the power industry currently works at home, and thus unfortunately without access to the printed edition of our VGB PowerTech Journal. What could be more obvious than to quickly use the possibilities of digitalisation in this case as well? Therefore, in anticipation of an ongoing project to further digitalize our publications, VGB now offers an online edition of the VGB PowerTech Journal, starting with issue 1/2019.

In order to not only give the existing readership access to our energy and power plant technology information and specialist articles, but also to gain new readership, access will be activated for the period of corona-related restrictions via our website without further restrictions. VGB is looking forward to receiving feedback on this new offer and wishes good professional entertainment.

VGB-S-002-03-2019-10-EN - Technical and Commercial Key Indicators for Power Plants - Now available as free of charge eBook!

The VGB-Standard VGB-S-002-03 allows the user to make a technical and economic assessment of power plants. In addition, the effect of price effects and the legal requirements on the power plant operation can be analyzed using the VGB-Standard. In detail, the user receives analysis options in the assessment of power plant processes, the assessment of plant operation and the determination of economic success.

The operation of power plants or the utilization of different technologies in energy conversion depends on a number of restrictions, the competitive environment, primarily on the costs as well as on the specific political framework in the electricity markets.

With the shown evaluation criteria for example the efficiency, availability and reliability of the individual technologies can be determined, compared with an each other and the own position of the power plant can be determined. This results in the possibility to influence the own competitive position.

This international event will bring together experts from leading operators, manufacturers and suppliers, authorities, scientists as well as related stakeholders to discuss important issues in the field of ecology and environment in hydropower with sessions on:

  • Ecological hydraulic engineering and renaturation
  • Optimal ecological operation in case of hydropeaking
  • Fish monitoring systems and experience with fish ascent and descent
  • Sediment management
  • Results of international research projects
  • Legal aspects at EU level

If you are interested to participate as a speaker please submit your abstract by May 15, 2020.
