The VGB-FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG (Research Foundation) awarded the Heinrich-Mandel Prize 2008 to Hilmar Kjartansson Danielsen (30), Technical University of Denmark, for his studies in the Z-Phase precipitation of martensitic steels. The 10,000 Euro prize was handed over on the occasion of the VGB Congress POWER PLANTS in Stuttgart/Germany on September 17, 2008.

The Power Plant Information System KISSY has been revised and equipped with new features. It has been multilingually equipped by VGB to document VGB's way towards Europe. The Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese languages are currently being offered. In addition to the performance indicators already existing further commercial (e.g. EEX data) and international indicators (e.g. UAGS) were included into KISSY. To evaluate these performance indicators, the new feature "Online Evaluation" can be used via the internet browser.

The data bases TherPerf (EURELECTRIC) and KISSY (VGB), both determining data of availability, will be merged. To present KISSY to the TherPerf users, an international seminar takes place at VGB Offices on October 28, 2008.

The Directive 2008/56/EG establishing a framework for community action in the field of marine environment policy (Marine Strategy Framework Directive) entered into force on July 15, 2008.
The Directive was published in the Official Journal of the European Union OJ L 164/19-40. This Directive establishes a framework within Member States shall take the necessary measures to achieve or maintain good environmental status in the marine environment by the year 2020 at the latest. The Directive applies for the different marine regions in the European Community like the Baltic See, the North-east Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Power plants situated in a coastal area and using seawater could be concerned by the Directive after its transposition into national law.

The 2nd edition of the Guideline VGB-R170C was published in the German language in 2004. VGB-R170Ce provides an English translation with identical content to this German edition. In this context the standards and guidelines referred to were updated.

The Technical-scientific Report "Availability of Thermal Power Plants" for the period 1997 to 2008 can be obtained from the VGB PowerTech Service GmbH now. The report analyses 392 power plants in total.
