2) Biomass Imports to Europe and Global Availability

Biomass has to play an important role in the EU to meet the 2020 targets. Jointly with EURELECTRIC, VGB commissioned a research project on the availability of biomass in 2020 in the EU-27 as well as the global availability. The study was carried out by Pöyry Consulting GmbH.

The main objective of the industrial orientated study was to evaluate the 2020 renewable energy targets in EU-27 based on domestic solid biomass supply potentials supplemented by imports.

In total there is a solid biomass supply gap in Europe to be expected in 2020 (26-38 Mtoe which would be equal to 55-85 Mtoe wood pellets), that could be sourced by imports. Global potentials exist to supply these volumes, but substantial investment in the establishment of appropriate supply chains would be needed.

3) Eleven Finalists of the Third Leading-Edge Cluster Competition are Fixed

On June 22, 2011 an independent jury selected the eleven finalists of the third Leading-Edge Cluster Competition of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. These finalists also include the cluster "Rhine Ruhr Power" with its target to develop "The Power Plant of the Future" which shall become an internationally marketable product. Therefore the cluster has the opportunity to be named as one of five clusters that will be funded by the ministry with up to 40 million Euro.

Within the cluster "Rhein Ruhr Power", VGB PowerTech implements the research project "The Partner Steam Power Plant for Renewable Power Generation" in cooperation with manufacturers and operators.
