“We are Building the Future – Electricity for Europe”

This year, the VGB Congress „Power Plants 2008“ taking place in Stuttgart will be dealing with the challenges of practically implementing appropriate power generation strategies for Europe which fulfil the high requirements regarding economicy, reliable supply and environmental protection.

Stuttgart is an attractive venue, perfectly fitting the motto of the congress

“We are Building the Future – Electricity for Europe”

The capital of the German federal state Baden-Wurttemberg and the central River Neckar region are the third largest conurbation in Germany, with 2.6 million people living there. Due to its central location within Europe, the conurbation also has one of the highest export rates and the highest number of patents of any region in Europe. Swabian traits of character, ingenuity, but also the sense for innovation have turned the idyllic town, which was first a ducal and later a royal residence, into a „Global Player“, known far beyond its borders and accommodating the headquarters of many international companies in various
business sectors.

Sense for innovation and orientation towards the future especially are indispensable traits of character when dealing with developing European power generation. By using state-of-the-art technology, numerous power plant projects currently underway show that this business sector has been acting in an innovative and foresighted way for years. With their many years of experience and their future-oriented view which is open for all new technologies, the manufacturers and plant operators are still convinced that only by using a mixture of various energy sources will we also be able to keep the quality of our power generation at the high level we are used to in the future. The key to this is making use of all options for power generation by continuously developing and applying modern technologies, as well as developing new ones. The European power plant construction projects currently underway prove that all energy carriers and generation technologies are required and demanded: renewable energies, hard coal and lignite, natural gas and nuclear energy still represent a broad mixture of energy sources. The immense expenses for ensuring and developing power generation require a stable market environment that will sustainably support the necessary investments in new power plants, but also in research and development. Besides political and economical criteria, the personnel and production capacities available, as well as the approval from the public are increasingly influencing this environment, both on a national and on a European level.

We therefore look forward to your contribution to the discussion and to your participation in the VGB Congress “Power Plants 2008“, and we wish you an interesting stay in Stuttgart.
