Galileo Prize Materials Testing awarded to Christian Ullrich

Christian Ullrich, head of the Department Technical Services of VGB PowerTech e.V. was awarded the 2,000 Euro “Galileo Prize Materials Testing 2017”. The three associations Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde e.V. (DGM), Deutsche Verband für Materialforschung und -prüfung (DVM) as well as Stahlinstitut VDEh honoured at their Conference “Materials Testing” the 34-year-old engineer Christian Ullrich for his outstanding merits in the field of materials for high-temperature and ultra-high temperature power plants. Christian Ullrich broke ground for power plant engineering with his achievements in materials development, quality assurance, construction monitoring and analysis of damage

High-performance and reliable materials, which can be applied at high temperatures, are inevitable for sophisticated power plant engineering.

High-temperature materials enable more efficient power plants which save fuel, reduce environmental burden and optimise entire plant efficiency. Such materials also play an important part in connection with the integration of renewables in power supply, i.e. these materials are more flexible in load following operation. The prize committee acknowledged important individual contributions of Christian Ullrich like damage investigations on the high-temperature material “T24”, updates of the VDI-Heat Atlas and VGB-Standard 517 on microstructural composition and creep rupture damage. These subjects and activities are supported by the close cooperation with Professor Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Tillmann and Dipl.-Ing. Hans-Georg Rademacher, chair for materials technology of Technische Universität Dortmund.

Dr Hans Bünting, Chairman of VGB PowerTech e.V. and Chief Operating Officer Renewables of innogy SE, said on the occasion of the award: “I am very pleased that Christian Ullrich is working with VGB and that his merits have now been honoured by the three associations. The Galileo Prize also acknowledges the entire activities of VGB and of the staff cooperating with Christian Ullrich enabling such engineering highlights. The award also underlines the important contributions made by VGB in electricity and heat generation.”

Christian Ullrich studied mechanical engineering focusing on materials engineering/quality as-surance at Technische Universität Dortmund. After his studies he had worked as project engineer in power plant engineering and power plant service before he became head of VGB´s technical Services in 2013.
