This conference is an event for presentations and discussions that runs in a two-yearly cycle, with the aim of improving the exchange of experience, knowledge and ideas between the operator community, manufacturers, insurers, public authorities and scientific experts. The framework of the event, which has gained appeal through the presence of our co-operation partners from the gas turbine industry, should simultaneously offer an international forum for personal contacts and technical discussion.

Significant progress in research and development has led to gas turbines acquiring strong appeal as key components of efficient, low-emission combined-cycle power plants and as drive units for peak-load plants and compressor stations. The efficiency of the gas turbines and the service life of the loaded components have been and are being improved in significant development steps, especially by improvements in the materials, in cooling technology and heat insulation, in the corrosion protection of the hot gas components, in the aerodynamic blade mounting arrangements in compressors and turbines, and in process management. With the increase in gas turbine efficiency induced by competition in the liberalised flow markets, combined with the reliability standards that must be adhered to, manufacturers and operators find themselves in a difficult state of tension. Major discrepancies between predicted and actual maintenance costs, resulting from premature exhaustion of service life or component failure, concern large portions of the operator community, manufacturers and insurers, today as much as ever. Questions of quality assurance in the manufacture and maintenance of gas turbines and strategic approaches to consolidating the lifecycle costs are also under the focus of current discussions. Increased competition from independent companies – the so-called NON-OEM – that have set themselves up on the gas turbine market alongside the OEM, offering a limited portfolio of services, offers the operators interesting alternatives. With appropriate technologies and new plant concepts, the growing requirements of sustainable environmental protection must be met alongside reliability of supply and economic viability. The developing global demand for oil and gas and the high proportion of gas turbine power plants both in operation and being built require gas turbines that will be fuel-flexible in future, for which new low-pollutant combustion systems are being developed.

With the presentations selected for this event, we shall again be addressing a variety of current topics concerning gas turbines and the operation of gas turbines.

VGB PowerTech e.V. would be delighted to welcome you to this conference.
