REACH and CCPs – update pre-SIEFs

From June to End of November 2008 several coal combustion products (CCPs) have been pre-registered according to the REACH regulation. With the pre-registration of CCPs with a specific EC number the producers became members of so called pre-SIEFs.

Advantages and Limitations of Biomass Co-combustion in Fossil Fired Power Plants

Co-combustion of biomass is an important technology for CO2-neutral electricity generation. In many countries biomass co-combustion is one of the most economic ways to save CO2. In addition it can be motivated by saving of CO2 taxes. Co-combustion of biomass is practiced in numerous plants, especially in Denmark, Belgium, The Netherlands, Poland, Italy and United Kingdom.

VGB/EURELECTRIC recommendations "European Wide Sector Specific Calculation Method for Reporting to the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register"

According to the „Regulation (EC) No. 166/2006 concerning the establishment of a European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register ...” emissions of certain pollutants - above fixed threshold values - from industrial installations, also from power plants, have to be reported. The emissions have to be reported annually, for the first time in 2008 for the reporting year 2007.

New Recommendation "Research for a Sustainable Energy Supply" of the VGB Scientific Advisory Board

The VGB Scientific Advisory Board, consisting of 29 chairs from the power and energy business from ten European countries, has compiled his view on the current situation of power research, his concerns and suggestions in a new recommendation.

CCS Brochure and Position Papers of Eurelectric and VGB PowerTech

Eurelectric and VGB PowerTech together with the members from the VGB Emax-Group CEZ, EDF, Electrabel, EnBW, ENEL, E.ON, EVN, PKE, PPC, RWE, STEAG and Vattenfall have worked out position papers of the European electricity sector about CO2 Capture and Storage. Both papers have been summarised in a brochure that has been distributed first at the VGB Congress 2007 in Salzburg.

New publication: VGB-Guideline R109 "Material Specification for Components under Pressure in Fossil-fired Power Plants"

The VGB-Guideline R109 "Material Specification for Components under Pressure in Fossil-fired Power Plants" applies to the steam boiler assembly and pipelines of the water/steam cycle. It shall clearly determine the delivery contract and the subsequent contract administration between customer, manufacturer and material manufacturer or supplier and thus enable a rationalisation of the order and order processing.

Literature Research “Climate Change and the Power Industry”

For decades, the power industry has been concerning itself with the climate change. The first time that the working group "CO2 and the Climate" researched the literature about this topic was as early as at the end of the 1980s. Owing to the constantly growing scientific findings, in 1991 and in 1995 updates of this literature research were made. Yet, this topic has become ever more important, and a new update was urgently required.

Integrity Concept for Piping System with Corresponding Leak and Break Postulates in German Nuclear Power Plants

In order to continuously guarantee the component integrity of light water reactors during operation the ”leak-before-break concept” is applied in Germany. This has been developed in the past 25 years on the basis of the safety criteria of the guidelines for damage precaution, of the German Reactor Safety Commission guidelines (RSK-LL) and the basis safety concept. The present paper will demonstrate that the German ”leak-before-break concept” has been proven successfully for the last 25 years and reflects the state of the art of science and technology.

VGB Document "Future of a Hydrogen Economy"

The advantages and limitations of the energy carrier hydrogen are described in the paper of VGB "Future of a Hydrogen Economy". It can be summarized that hydrogen cannot compete with the direct use of electricity due to high efficiency losses at the different hydrogen pathways.

EURELECTRIC HOLDS ROLE OF ELECTRICITY WORKSHOPS

Successful workshops were held on the demand and supply parts of EURELECTRIC’s Role of Electricity Project on 20-22 November in Brussels, confirming the importance of competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply, and analysing the contribution that electricity can make to these three key energy drivers. The demand-side workshop highlighted the significant potential for energy savings through technological innovation and the importance of new applications of electricity. In the second workshop, preliminary results of the supply-side part of the Role of Electricity project were presented, after a discussion on the prospects of global fuel supply.
