Hydropower - An indispensable part of the secure power supply in Europe

On 8 January 2021, Europe was on the verge of a blackout. Here it became clear once again how hydropower makes a significant contribution to stabilise the European electricity grids in crisis situations.

VGB PowerTech has prepared a background report on the event with a special focus on the role of hydropower. The attached report looks beyond an analysis of the power grid disruption and highlights the challenges associated with the ongoing transformation of the European energy system and how hydropower plants can contribute even further to grid protection and security of supply in the future.

Re-purposing Coal Power Plants during Energy Transition (RECPP)

This European funded project demonstrates the re-purposing potential of coal-fired power plants in coal regions in transition. RECPP matches characteristic sites and exemplary implementation concepts, thus preparing future pilot projects.

RECPP is aiming at the inclusion of the entire industrial sector in three consecutive European workshops open for all stakeholders. Thirteen European operators of power plants and research institutions, coordinated by VGB, are core partner supported by further ten operators as associated partners.

Focus of the second workshop is the collection of feedback on re-purposing solutions for coal-fired power plant sites. This will help us to identify sustainable technologies and solutions for infrastructure re-uses. Register now free for the 2nd cross-national RECPP workshop taking place as interactive online event on 21 May 2021.

VGB Innovation Award 2021 - Submit your proposal by 20 May 2021!

The VGB Research Foundation awards outstanding performance of young university graduates or professionals (age limit: 35 years). Eligible work can relate either to innovation in the operation of plants for generation and storage of power and heat, or to new findings in research.

The VGB Innovation Award is endowed with in total 10,000 €. It is awarded in the two categories "application-oriented" and "future-oriented" with different evaluation criteria.

Reward outstanding performance and propose - as VGB member or as member of the VGB Scientific Advisory Board - promising candidates now. Submit your candidate proposal by 20 May 2021 at the latest!

VGB position paper: Tests according to German BetrSichV in case of final decommissioning of pressure systems in coal-fired power plants

With the implementation of the German Coal Electric Power Generation Termination Act (KVBG), a larger number of pressure systems in the affected power plant blocks will be taken out of operation. It can happen that shortly before decommissioning there are still due dates for carrying out tests on pressure systems and their system parts according to German BetrSichV.

This position paper describes technically and economically appropriate procedures for handling tests and their due dates for coal-fired power plants shortly before final decommissioning, as well as the associated administrative processing of the decommissioning in the sense of the German BetrSichV for inspection and monitoring plants required by ZÜS.

Hydropower Industry Guide 2020/21

The Hydropower Industry Guide 2020/21 gives a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the newest products and services offered by the hydropower sector. It provides an easy-to-use directory of companies providing key products and services of the worldwide hydro market. These products and services can help you to do your job more effectively.

VGB Conference „Steam Turbines and Operation of Steam Turbines 2021 - OnLine

Due to the still ongoing Corona situation, we decided to hold the event OnLine instead of a face-to-face event.

With almost the same top-class program, the event will take place as planned on June 1 and 2, 2021 at significantly reduced prices.

We look forward to welcoming you OnLine.

VGB provides energy-related reading material in the home office

As a consequence of the corona restrictions, a large number of employees in the power industry currently work at home, and thus unfortunately without access to the printed edition of our VGB PowerTech Journal. What could be more obvious than to quickly use the possibilities of digitalisation? In anticipation of an ongoing project to further digitalize publications, VGB offers an online edition of the VGB PowerTech Journal, starting with issue 1/2019.

In order to not only give the existing readership access to our energy and power plant technology information and specialist articles, but also to gain new readership, access is activated for the period of corona-related restrictions via our website. VGB is looking forward to receiving feedback on this offer.
