Labelling systems for the generation and storage of electricity and heat

  • Efficient operational management
  • RDS-PP for the new technologies
  • Digitalisation of proven technologies

Systematic and uniform labelling of installations for the generation and storage of electricity and heat is not a matter of course. However, it is an essential element, especially with regard to digitalisation, for cost-efficient planning, construction, operation, maintenance and dismantling. In addition, a labelling system acknowledged by the power industry is the basis for plant and product documentation. It is the key to efficient data management, modern condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Our new topical homepage concisely summarises all services related to KKS and RDS-PP. Discover novelties and find your tailor-made solution!

Wind energy plant designation: Increasing efficiency with the harmonised system RDS-PP®

VGB has developed a standard for the designation of wind power plants under the title RDS-PP® - Reference Designation System for Power Plants: Wind Power Plants. RDS-PP provides a clear designation of components and systems for wind power plants, quasi from the tip of the blade to the grid connection and beyond. Such a unique designation supports operators, manufacturers and service providers in an efficient way in planning, construction, operation and maintenance of wind power plants. It is also the basis for digitisation in wind energy.

Leading operators of wind power plants represented in the VGB now appeal with their document “Use of RDS-PP® as a harmonized designation system for wind power plants. Position paper from the owner's point of view” to the industry to use RDS-PP as a cross-vendor independent system.

Wind Power Performance Data Exchange – WiPPeX

In order to optimize the operation of the wind power plants, the database "Wind Power Performance Data Exchange - WiPPeX" was established by VGB on the initiative of the SF Wind. The structure of the database allows the performance comparison of different individual wind turbine platforms. The needed SCADA data are continuously supplied as 10-min time slices on a monthly basis. Companies who provide operational wind power plant data are allowed to use the database to evaluate the operational data by their own. In minimum, three different companies have to participate at the individual wind turbine platform to guarantee the anonymization process, which is assured by VGB. The member companies of the SF Wind Stadtwerke München, EnBW and Vattenfall have provided the data for the Vestas V90-2MW wind turbine platform retroactively from 1 January 2019.

The aim is to continuously expand the database and to include further wind turbine platforms. Essential anonymized “Error Codes” grouped for the main components will be included within the individual databases in a further step.

VGB represented in various industry webinars

As part of the VDI online event "Let's save the climate together" and at webinars of the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF), the VGB reported on the role of dispatchable power generation technologies in the energy system.

On 20 May 2020, the online event "Let's save the climate together" took place – it was organized jointly by the VDI and the “Fridays for Future” movement. Almost 300 participants discussed intensively what contribution engineers can make to climate change, greenhouse gas neutrality and the energy transition. VGB’s managing director Dr Oliver Then explained the role of dispatchable generation technologies in the future energy system.

A similar topic was the focus of two webinars organized by IGEF on 30 April and 15 May 2020. The aim of the webinars was to convey experiences and recommendations for the flexible operation of coal-fired power plants. Dr. Claudia Weise from VGB provided an insight into the situation in Europe in her presentations. She also reported on measures that have proven beneficial for flexible power plant operation. Over 300 industry representatives from Germany and India took part in the DIEF webinars. Many of them took the opportunity to exchange ideas with the speakers. Due to time constraints, many of the questions could only be answered by e-mail after the webinars.

VGB CONGRESS 2020 postponed to 2021!

More than anything else, we care about the safety and health of our participants, guests and partners. Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that we have decided to postpone our Jubilee Congress 2020 “100 Years VGB” until next year. Even though we have already invested a great deal of work together with you, our sponsors, exhibitors and speakers and were looking forward to a special event with up-to-date presentations and exciting discussions, the distance and hygiene rules and travel restrictions imposed by the authorities that are still to be expected do not allow for an unrestricted large-scale event including a carefree anniversary party.

We have set September 22 and 23, 2021 | Grand Hall Zollverein as the new date.

In order not to let the anniversary date pass by and to nevertheless draw the attention of the industry to our association and its anniversary, we would like to hold a part of the opening event and the panel discussion already planned online on September 9, 2020. We like to invite you already today to this event. Further details and login will be provided in a due time.

Attend the VGB Jubilee Congress on September 22 and 23, 2021!

Foundation of a new project group for Run-of-River power plants

VGB founded a new project group "Run-of-River" with experts from the VGB committees TC Hydro and TG Performance Indicators. The kick-off meeting with international members already took place in February 2020.

One of the aims is to establish a technical benchmark for this type of power plant. Thus, the statistical recording of pumped storage and storage power plants, which has already been realised in the Power Plant Information System (KISSY), will be extended by that of run-of-river power plants.

Price reduction for PSA / breathing masks!

VGB PowerTech has new protective masks (FFP2 or masks with equivalent test standard according to KN95) and transparent face protection available at lower rates for its member companies and companies in the field of critical infrastructure. Delivery can be effected immediately and also in larger quantities.

The masks can be ordered in the VGB Online Shop with a minimum order quantity of 100 pcs.

VGB will extend its offer, if there is an additional need for protective equipment.

For individual inquiries regarding larger quantities or further PPE products please contact us by e-mail mark@vgb.org.

Keep safe and stay healthy!

VGB provides energy-related reading material in the home office

As a consequence of the corona-conditioned restrictions also in the daily work routine, a large number of employees in the power industry currently work at home, and thus unfortunately without access to the printed edition of our VGB PowerTech Journal. What could be more obvious than to quickly use the possibilities of digitalisation in this case as well? Therefore, in anticipation of an ongoing project to further digitalize our publications, VGB now offers an online edition of the VGB PowerTech Journal, starting with issue 1/2019.

In order to not only give the existing readership access to our energy and power plant technology information and specialist articles, but also to gain new readership, access will be activated for the period of corona-related restrictions via our website without further restrictions. VGB is looking forward to receiving feedback on this new offer and wishes good professional entertainment.
