VGB Congress 2015: Plenary Session - Sonja van Renssen |
Register
now! VGB Congress 2016 - The leading industry event of power
generation
The
VGB congress 2016 is on track. We cordially invite you to join us at
our conference - with accompanying technical exhibition - at the
Congress Center Leipzig on 21 and 22 September 2016.
What
are the prospects of future power generation? What are opportunities
for operators, manufacturers and service companies in this changing
environment? These topics will be discussed by renowned experts from
politics, business and research at the VGB Congress "New Horizons:
Navigating the Power Industry in Times of Change".
The
topics of presentations range from the integration of renewables,
investments in new construction projects and the optimisation of the
current power plants to commercial optimisation. The VGB Congress
provides the unique exchange on these issues for all sources of
electricity production – renewable and conventional generation – of
the European energy mix.
The
current programme can be found on our website.
We
look forward to welcoming you in Leipzig and joining you in
discussing not only the future of the industry, but also the ways by
which we will arrive there.

India – Indian delegation visits the VGB Congress
A
high-ranking Indian delegation with representatives from the
Ministry of Energy, the Central Electricity Authority as well as
from different companies and institutions will participate in the
VGB Congress in Leipzig.
An
“India Meet and Greet” will take place at the exhibition on
September 20, 2016, as part of the get together. Interested parties
have the chance to learn more about the diverse opportunities that
exist in the Indian energy market and to interact with sector
experts. The Indian energy sector has at the top of its agenda
ambitious targets for building up its renewable energy capabilities
as well as flexibility requirements and new emission regulations for
thermal power plants. The Congress visit forms part of the study
tour initiated by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy under
the auspices of the Indo-German Energy Forum.

Conference Steam Turbines and Operation of Steam Turbines 2016
proved very popular
Opening
ceremony
The
event was very well attended, with about 400 persons. 37 companies
presented their products in the technical exhibition.
The
main topics focused on: Requirements for operation and maintenance
due to the “Energiewende”, operating experience with new
technologies, operation and revision of industrial steam turbines,
quality assurance new construction and revision (combined cycle),
oil management.
In
2018 this conference will takes place in the Rhein-Mosel-Halle in
Koblenz, Germany on 6/7 June 2018. Please, save the date
already now!

New
power plants in Europe: Update July 2016
The excel sheet New Power Plants in Europe comprises power
plants in planning and under construction. Energy sources like gas,
hard coal, lignite, wind, water, waste etc. are considered. Based on
this sheet, the planned total output (MW) and the portions of the
sources of energy (MW) can be determined.

Benchmark
study on European-Pollutant Release and Transfer Register emission
reporting and assessment of best practices
The
European-Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (E-PRTR) obliges
operators of industrial installations to provide data on pollutant
release and transfer to their national competent authorities. The
nationally checked reports are submitted to the European Commission
to be included in the E-PRTR. The E-PRTR database is a publicly
accessible electronic database on the Internet.
It
is important that the power plant sector has a consistent, practical
and cost effective means of reporting under this regime. For this
purpose a benchmark study into several aspects of E-PRTR reporting
involving ten European operator companies will be performed.

- Exclusion of foreign material ingress into opened

The
foreign materials which enter plant systems and components
predominantly comprise grinding dust, metal chips, cable ties,
welding beads and blasting abrasives for surface cleaning, but also
include parts of tools, auxiliary materials and other loose parts
which are discarded or forgotten during work. As experience shows,
these foreign materials can cause damage or disruption to plant
components.
The
VGB-Standard VGB-S-120 lists measures which are conducive to
maintaining cleanliness in the plant (in mechanical, electrical and
chemical regards) during maintenance and modification work.

Alternative
water supplies for coal-fired power stations - New report from the
IEA Clean Coal Centre
Global
energy demand is rising, and water is becoming scarcer in many parts
of the world. The power generation industry is often the largest
industrial user of fresh water. Many countries with a growing demand
for energy are also water stressed. Coal-fired power plants need a
reliable supply of water, of a specified quality, that will be
available over the lifetime of the plant (often 40 years +). This
means alternative water sources will become increasingly important.
In
her latest report for the IEA Clean Coal Centre, Anne Carpenter
examines non-fresh water sources for coal-fired power plants in
China, India, South Africa and the USA. These are the top four
thermal coal consuming countries and all have water-stressed
regions. The potential water sources are: waste water from municipal
water treatment plants, brackish and sea water, mine water, produced
water from oil and gas wells (including coalbed methane wells), and
water from deep saline aquifers.
