Re-purposing Coal Power Plants during Energy Transition (RECPP)

This project opens perspectives beyond of the coal phase out. RECPP supports coal regions in transition by mapping

  • potential European coal power plant sites;
  • sustainable solutions for re-purposing equipment and infrastructure.

RECPP demonstrates the re-purposing potential by matching characteristic sites and exemplary implementation concepts, thus preparing future pilot projects.

RECPP is aiming at the inclusion of the entire industrial sector in three consecutive European workshops open for all stakeholders.

RECPP is carried out from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2022. Thirteen European operators of power plants and research institutions, coordinated by VGB, are core partner supported by further associated partners.

Operators may join the project as an associated partner. Ask for partnership!

Indo-German Energy Forum: Further test runs planned in Indian power plants

A team of Indian and German experts is currently planning test runs at the Indian power plants Andal and Maithon. These test runs aim to assess the potential for the flexible operation of these two coal-fired power plants. The Andal power plant is located in the state of West Bengal and is operated by Damodar Valley Corporation – unit 2 with a capacity of 500 MW is selected for the test runs. The nearby Maithon power plant in Jharkhand state is operated by TataPower. The investigations also focus on unit 2 with 525 MW.

The work is coordinated by the Flexibility Task Force under the auspices of the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF), headed by the Director Operations at NTPC. On the Indian side, also the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the system operator POSOCO and BHEL are involved. The VGB partner organization EEC coordinates the work, supported by VGB, GIZ, Siemens and Steag Energy Services.

Flexible operation of thermal power plants has been at the top of the IGEF agenda since 2016. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is responsible for the activities on the German side – GIZ manages the projects on behalf of the ministry. Important milestones so far have been the successful test runs in the Dadri coal-fired power plant and the publication of the Flexibility Toolbox. As part of a new contract from GIZ, VGB continues its work with its partners.

In the meantime, flexible power plant operation has also become a topic of the Turkish-German energy partnership – the VGB is also actively involved in this.

VGB PowerTech: Renewables, Increasing flexibility and digitalisation as main tasks for future power supply

VGB PowerTech celebrates 100 Years of association history with White Paper “Energy is us” about future power supply

“Politics and society need a better understanding of technology and the energy industry”, said VGB Chairman Dr. Georgios Stamatelopoulos. This is the main message of the white paper Future Energy System, which was published in the course of the online event on the occasion of VGB's 100th anniversary.

According to VGB, eight fields of action are important “which are essential for the success of the energy system transformation”. These include the further massive expansion of renewable energies. “One example is the current discussion on the amendment of the Renewable Energy Sources Act in Germany”, said Mr. Stamatelopoulos at the opening of the online broadcast technical discussion with high-ranking representatives from politics and the energy industry.

Here you can enjoy the VGB Live-Online-Event of September 9, 2020 once again in full version.

Hydropower industry, civil society organisations, and EU policymakers met in HYDROPOWER EUROPE’s interactive workshop to shape the future of hydropower

On 12 /13 October 2020, HYDROPOWER EUROPE organized a unique two-day online workshop under the name “Hydropower seeking its role in the clean energy transition - Answering technical, environmental and social challenges for hydropower as a catalyst for the clean energy transition in Europe” gathering over 160 attendees to define the future of hydropower in Europe.

Revision of the Feed Water Guidance VGB-S-010

The VGB-Standard VGB-S-010 “Feed Water, Boiler Water and Steam Quality for Power Plants/ Industrial Plants” supports the operator of water-steam cycles in power plants and related branches in selecting and assessing suitable water regimes with respect to a safe and economically sound operation of the power plant for a long period of time. This guidance does not deliver absolute limiting values of chemical parameters but demonstrates permissible operation ranges to achieve minimal corrosion within the water-steam cycle and to reach an optimised lifetime of the plant by implementation of an action level (AL) control system.

VGB is now revising the guidance and would like to get more knowledge about the experience with the action level control system for base- and peak-load plants as well as for cycling operation and grid reserve plants.

Therefore, we would like to ask you to fill in the questionnaire available for download.

VGB provides energy-related reading material in the home office

As a consequence of the corona restrictions, a large number of employees in the power industry currently work at home, and thus unfortunately without access to the printed edition of our VGB PowerTech Journal. What could be more obvious than to quickly use the possibilities of digitalisation in this case as well? Therefore, in anticipation of an ongoing project to further digitalize our publications, VGB offers an online edition of the VGB PowerTech Journal, starting with issue 1/2019.

In order to not only give the existing readership access to our energy and power plant technology information and specialist articles, but also to gain new readership, access is activated for the period of corona-related restrictions via our website. VGB is looking forward to receiving feedback on this offer.

VGB-S-103-00-2020-02-EN - Monitoring, limiting and protection devices on steam turbine plants - Now available as eBook!

Definitions and general aspects of monitoring, limiting and protection devices are dealt with in an introductory section of this VGB-Standard. Criteria groups and possible failures, measures to limit failures and designs of redundant systems are specified. Further sectiona explain the tasks to be performed by the various bodies.
