Peaking plant Bayonne (New Jersey): A flexible solution to support a volatile gridShawn Picard, Ethos Energy USA and Tobias Aschoff, Siemens AG, Erlangen, GermanyThe Bayonne Energy Center (BEC) in New Jersey is a natural gas-fired, highly flexible 512 MW peaking plant. A 6.5 mile power line under the Upper New York Bay connects it with New York City (NYISO Zone J). The power it produces meets the volatile demand, by delivering sufficient electricity to over 500,000 homes at peak times. The plant consists of eight aero-derivative Industrial Trent60 gas turbines with 64 MW each. Based on the BEC operating experience this session will discuss the advantages of the applied plant solution. Typical load profiles will illustrate the volatile demand and supply. In this context, it will be discussed how the plant set-up allows providing on/off cycle flexibility and fast response, while optimizing fuel cost and emissions. The session will focus on the following key capabilities of the plant:
