Date: Wednesday, 21 September 2016 A walking tour of Leipzig is the best way to get an impression of the most importants signs of Leipzig. This walking tour of Leipzig look inter alia attractions such as the St. Thomas’ Church, the St. Nicholas‘ Church, the Bach Monument, the Old Town Hall, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Mädlerpassage with Auerbach’s Keller, the Naschmarkrt with the Old Stock Exchange and the oldest coffee house – The Arab Coffebaum. Afterwards you will go by bus to southeast of Leipzig. The special attraction in is the Monument of the Battle of the Nations. From 16 to 19 October 1813 Leipzig was the scene of the Battle of the Nations. The allied armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden won it the decisive victory over Napoleon and his allies on German soil. 1913 Völkerschlachtdenkmal was opened as a national monument. An observation deck offers visitors a phenomenal panoramic view of Leipzig and the surrounding area. Note: The ascent leads through a very narrow staircase. |

Leipziger Stadtwerke laid the foundations for the future of energy provision in Leipzig over 20 years ago with its highly efficient combined-cycle gas and steam turbine power plant (CCPP). The high-tech combined heat and power system at the heart of the city has provided efficient and environmentally friendly district heating and electricity since 1993. Natural gas is used as the primary energy carrier (in exceptional cases light fuel oil is also used). The plant has excellent fuel efficiency of up to 90 %, minimising its carbon dioxide emissions. |

The Lippendorf 1,840 MW power plant is located in the Free State of Saxony, about 15 kilometres south of Leipzig, the city of fairs. The newly constructed plant generates base-load power and reaches a net efficiency of 42 %. The first unit was connected to the grid in June 1999 for the first time, the second connection to the power system followed half a year afterwards. With an investment volume of approx. 2.3 billion Euros, the new construction project of Lippendorf power plant was the largest private project in the Free Sate of Saxony realised after 1990. Standards have also been set in the field of environmental protection. In comparison with the specific emissions of the old plants (the reference year is 1990), the following reductions could be reached for each kilowatt hour supplied to the power system: by 44.6 % for carbon dioxide, by 99 % for dust, by 98 % for sulphur dioxide and by 73 % for nitrogen dioxide. |
