Energy-Economical Planning for Grid Integration of Wind Energy in Germany ashore and off-shore by the Year 2020

Project Number 246

Future utilisation of offshore wind energy offers considerable potential. In January 2002, the federal government has thus passed a "Federal government strategy for offshore wind energy utilisation".

One of the central challenges for utilisation of energy potentials is grid connection and -integration of offshore-windparks into German electricity infrastructure. The following has to be considered in this context:

  •  the existing electricity grid capacities,
  • future developments in utilisation of renewables ashore,
  • availability and demands to power plant control capacity,
  • developments in national and international electricity transport.

On the basis of the federal government strategy and in co-operation with several institutes and companies, Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) (German Energy Agency) elaborates a concept for grid integration of offshore windparks. The VGB Technical Committee "Use of Renewables and Distributed Generation" will technically support the project.

The results of the study will be presented in December 2004.
