Hallein Salt Mine and Museum of the Celts
September 21, 2007 10.00 a.m. – 04.00 p.m.
The historical old town of
Hallein
is under preservation order, and just as 400 years ago, it is adorned with smart civil houses in bright colours. The town's real fame, however, must be attributed to the
show mine
in the Bad Dürrnberg quarter, in which salt had already being mined underground in 600 BC. The mine acquired special significance in the 16th Century, when under the Archbishops of Salzburg, it rose to be the most efficient saltworks in the Eastern Alps. Before your start your tour around the "World of Salt", bread, salt and schnapps will be given at the entrance to the tunnels as a traditional sign of hospitality. On your way through the branching system of tunnels, which runs between Salzburg and Bavaria, two long miners' slides, an underground raft ride and rushing rides on mine-cars will ensure a varied viewing. After a 1-hour lunchbreak and a brief walkthrough the old town of Hallein, you will visit the newly reorganised
Museum of the Celts
.

September 20, 2007 02.00 p.m. – 05.00 p.m.
September 21, 2007 10.00 a.m. – 01.00 p.m.
To the south of the city lies
Palace Hellbrunn
, which was built at the start of the 17th Century as a venue for parties with musical and theatrical entertainment, but also as a place for retreat and recuperation in the direct proximity of the city.
A tour will lead you through the palace, which was commissioned by Archbishop Markus Sittikus and built all ording to the plans of Santino Solaris. On the premises, architecture and landscape merge to form an artistic fabric. This includes the palace and an adjacent building, the stylised beds and ponds in the
baroque gardens, the hedges and tree rows of the English park landscape, and finally the waterworks with the Roman theatre.
The mythical
waterworks
continue to enchant visitors from all over the world. The only original water machines left in Europe are fed by countless springs and moved by the force of the water and by simple mechanisms. The visitor encounters allegorical figures, borrowed from baroque operas or representing female deities in marble. The animals from the city's coat of arms are also well represented: the lion, the goat and the unicorn.

Guided city tour "Over the city hills of Salzburg"
September 21, 2007 02.00 p.m. – 06.00 p.m.
On this tour of discovery across the hills of Salzburg, enjoy the finest views over the city and the surrounding countryside in all compass directions. The short hike, which definitely requires sturdy footwear, first leads through the Mirabell Gardens before it is time for the first ascent up the Kapuzinerberg (“Capuchin Hill”). This city hill, the highest in Salzburg at 636 m, forms the northern end of the chalk Alps in the area of the city. There are six baroque crossroads chapels along the Stefan-Zweig-Weg to the Capuchin monastery, which were built between 1736 and 1744 by artisans from Salzburg. The Passion chapels document the story of the Passion of Christ in sculpted scenes and figures, and culminate in a powerful crucifixion ensemble at the summit. After this 15-minute climb, you are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view over the city of Salzburg.
The tour continues through the old town in the direction of the Festungsberg (“Fortress Hill”), which stands 542 m high. The fortress railway brings you to the symbol of the city of Salzburg: the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the largest fully intact fortress in central Europe. After a complete tour of the fortifications, the path leads on via the Mönchsberg (“Monk Hill”) to the Museum of Modern Art. This very special city tour ends here, and the participants can choose between an optional visit to the museum or a ride back to Salzburg’s old town with the Mönchsberg lift.
Minimum number of participants: 15 people
Meeting point: congress building, main entrance, Mirabell Garden
Price per person: 28,00 EURO

Kaprun Alpine Reservoirs
September 22, 2007 09.00 a.m. – 05.00 p.m.
An excursion to the Kaprun Alpine Reservoirs is a fascinating journey into the high mountains. The experience begins at Kesselfall-Alpenhaus with transfer buses to the Lärchwand diagonal lift, the largest in Europe. Almost without a sound, you glide up past mixed beech woods and rough mountainsides to the mountain station at 1 640 m above sea level. After this impressive ride, the journey continues by bus to Mooserboden at 2 040 m. The alpine pastures that invite you to come hiking, the turquoise water of the lakes and the glaciers make an intense impression. After a lunchbreak in the Mooserboden mountain restaurant with regional delicacies and a magnificent view of the mountain, the guests discover during a tour of the dam wall how "white gold“ – electric power – is made from water. Between the Mooserboden and the Drossen dams lies the
"Electricity & Ice Adventure World"
museum, where the visitors can find out about the world of glaciers and the history of power plant construction. The "Glacier Ice" exhibition takes you into the world of alpine glaciers. The water that is used for power generation in the Kaprun power plant mostly comes from the surrounding glaciers. The exhibition, put together by recognised experts, informs the visitors about the secrets of this wonderful natural phenomenon.
With the storage power plants in Kaprun and with the Schwarzach power station the VERBUND-Austrian Hydro Power AG has been operating hydro-power stations in the state of Salzburg already since the late 1950 years. The storage power stations Kaprun dispose of an capacity of 330 000 kw plus the 130 000 kw of the pumps in the power station Kaprun upper reservoir. The annual average is nearly 700 million kwh of valuble peak load. The power stations are automatised and are remote-monitored and -controlled from the control center “Speicher” in Kaprun.

"Salzburg Mitte" Combined Cycle Power Plant of the Salzburg AG and Water High Reservoir Kapuziner Mountain
After an operating time of 45 years the old Salzburg Mitte combined cycle power plant was replaced by a highly efficient, more environmentally friendly, stat-of-the-art combined cycle power plant. Since the beginning of the year 2003 the new power plant, one of the most modern combined cycle power plants in Europe, supplies the city of Salzburg with heat and power. A high performance gas turbine yields the maximum of energy out of the energy source natural gas. Heat and power are generated environmentallycompatible in an ideal proximity to the customer.
Technical Data:
Start of operation (complete station): 2001 (2003)
Type of power station: Heating power station with gas and steam installation
Annual: electrical 314 430 MWh
thermal 322 485 MWh
Maximum capacity electrical gas turbine: 54 700 kW
electrical steam turbine 28 960 kW
thermal 127 000 kW
Water High Reservoir Kapuziner Mountain
As supplier of infrastructural services the Salzburg AG also provides the city of Salzburg with water.
The cavern-container in the Kapuziner mountain is a so-called “transition container”: the drinking water is conveyed in a transportation pipe from the sources of origin into the high reservoir. From there it is given off via pipes into the supply net.
The container disposes of a capacity of 25,000 m
3
. The complete storage capacity of the city of Salzburg amounts to 53,000 m
3
. This is approx. the quantity of water which the population and industry need on a summerday with a high comsumption of water.
Meeting point: congress building, main entrance, Mirabell Garden
