Future becomes reality - Investments in new power plants

"Time for Dresden" is the motto of the Saxon state capital for its 800 anniversary that is being celebrated this year. The city was mentioned for the first time in a medieval document about 800 years ago and since then the city has lived through a lot of eventful experiences. The decisive impulses for the development of Dresden followed when August the Strong had acquired the Polish crown in the middle of the 17th century. Today's townscape is characterised by buildings of the baroque, rococo and neo-renaissance that are contemporary witnesses of the historical development. But also technology, even "steam engineering", has its important roots in Dresden. In 1828 the "Technical Educational Establishment" was founded as predecessor of today's "Dresden Technical University". It is among the oldest technical-academical German institutions. Its founders managed to engage Johann Andreas Schubert, the constructor of the first operative German steam locomotive "Saxonia", as teacher of the university's predecessor. Today, there are nearly 35,000 students who study at the multifarious departments in the fields of technology and sciences, arts and medicine.

This is the historical and culturally important setting of this year's VGB Congress "Power Plants 2006" under the motto

"Future becomes reality - Investments in new power plants".

The general conditions of the future electricity generation in European were outlined at the previous VGB Congresses clearly indicating to the foreseeable new demand in power plant capacity. Apart from the technical challenges, the required political general conditions were addressed likewise. The current planning and/or realisation of new power plant projects in Europe demonstrate impressively that the electricity industry - yet with innovative engineering like CO2-free pilot plants - is actively assuming responsibility for the future. This all will be one topic on the Congress agenda just like a view beyond the European nose to South Africa or the Indian Subcontinent and Asia. It goes without saying that in view of the broad energy mix all energy conversion processes are on the agenda.

Besides of the technical visits, the side-programme of the VGB Congress offers a large variety to visit the "Florence of the Elbe" with its historical and cultural beauties. The harmonic atmosphere of city and architecture, landscape and nature was finally also acknowledged by the UNESCO which made Dresden a world heritage.

We are looking forward to meeting you again when you take your "Time for Dresden" and your "Time for the VGB Congress 2006" to attend our programme with its up-to-date and important lectures and to enjoy our host city with its interesting history and culture.

See you in Dresden!
