Decades of close co-operation both among power plant- and grid operators and among the load distributors of the various interconnected electricity suppliers has been considerably cut by the introduction of the deregulated energy industry.
The generally existing power grids have been designed on the basis of a central supply by large-scale power plants, which induct on a high and extra high voltage level. Distributed generation plants, which also induct on lower levels (low and medium voltage) are responsible that the once unidirectional flow of energy has become bidirectional. With increasing density of distributed generation causes fundamental questions arise concerning management, capacity planning, stability, protective strategies and most of all the guarantee of distribution quality and security.
Besides the established electricity markets, power plant operators have nowadays the chance to market their generation capacities at reserve markets. In addition to day-ahead markets, i.e. the spot market for electrical energy and the market for minute reserve, power plant operators have the opportunity to participate in intraday markets, which become more and more significant.
These questions have caused consequences in power plant operation, which not occurred in the past. The workshop is an opportunity to discuss the above issues between grid and power plant operators.
