Cooperation contract between eCl@ss and VGB PowerTech

(v.l.) Dr. Gunther Kegel
(Board Member eClass),
Dr. Oliver Then (VGB)

After intensive discussions at the Hannover exhibition 2015 the cooperation contract between VGB PowerTech e.V. and eCl@ss e.V. could be signed. This cooperation represents an appropriate expansion of VGB’s and eCl@ss portfolio in the field of cross-industry standards.

In the present eCl@ss expert group “Construction, operation and maintenance” VGB contributed with their competence in the power plant area. By this the broad base of the cross-industry product of data standards of eCl@ss can be expanded and the expansion of the VGB activities achieves the status of an ISO/IEC standardize- compliant industry standard.

By this cooperation a standard with international circulation and high market penetration is produced. Under the cooperation maintained by the VGB special instructions for unambiguous identification of components in eCl@ss are to be mapped.

VGB Conference "Generation in Competition 2015": Using Flexible Technologies to Ensure a Sustainable Energy System

Rainer Baake
State Secretary BMWi

At the VGB Conference "Generation in Competition 2015" a vision of how a flexible and secure energy supply could look like in the future was presented to the conference's 180 visitors. The VGB conference was held in Berlin on April 21/22, 2015. The conference topics covered all power and heat generation aspects, ranging from the use of battery storage over operating experience in offshore wind through to the technological challenges facing conventional power stations. "We are pleased that there was so much lively discussion and are glad about the sharing of information and experience initiated by events such as this," said Dr. Oliver Then, Head of the VGB Competence Center Power Plant Technologies and the conference host. "Together with our members we want to actively shape the energy transition and with flexible generation concepts contribute to a secure energy supply both now and in the future."

The challenges for the sector are immense. Those challenges were summarized succinctly in the plenary speech given by State Secretary Rainer Baake, the person in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) who is responsible for achieving the German energy transition. A lively discussion ensued that revolved around the future design of the electricity market as well as the CO2 tax for inefficient plants planned by the BMWi, for example.

Reminder: VGB Quality Award 2015 Nominations Open Through 15 June 2015

Quality Award

VGB invites all ordinary members of VGB PowerTech to propose a supplier, who has delivered a project of outstanding quality, for the VGB Quality Award 2015.

The VGB Quality Award has been established to increase the awareness for the commercial value of quality and to highlight examples of suppliers who have delivered extraordinary quality in services and products. The VGB Quality Award has been extended and is now covering all electricity and heat generation technologies - renewables, distributed generation, hydro, oil-, gas- and coal fired power stations - and all kind of projects - new build, refurbishment, maintenance, or decommissioning.

As the VGB Quality Award has not been awarded in 2014 in default of the minimum number of proposals, all proposals from 2014 will be considered this year. In the future the VGB Quality Award will be awarded every two years.

VGB Innovation Award - Proposal Deadline Extended to May 31

The VGB Research Foundation has awarded outstanding performance of young university graduates (age limit: 35 years) working in the field of power and heat generation for more than 30 years. For the first time in 2015, we will honour such achievement with the VGB Innovation Award.

The VGB Innovation Award is endowed with 10,000 € and is presented on the occasion of the VGB Congress POWER PLANTS 2015.

The work that is to be honoured in this way can relate either to innovation in the operation of power and heat generation plants, or to important new findings in research.

Based on the award guideline, all VGB member companies as well as the members of the Scientific Advisory Board of VGB have the right to propose candidates.

VGB Conference "Chemistry in Power Plants 2015": Call for Papers - Deadline Extended!

VGB's annual Conference "Chemistry in Power Plants" will take place in Berlin, Germany, on October 28/29, 2015. The conference is a forum for energy utilities and operators of industrial power plants. Operating experience will be discussed and technical developments in the field of power plant chemistry will be presented.

The call for papers submission deadline has been extended to May 29, 2015.

Call for Papers - VGB KELI Conference 2016

Every two years VGB PowerTech e.V. arranges a Technical Conference on Electrical Engineering, C&I and IT for operators and planners of all types of generation plants.

For the event KELI 2016, which will take place on May 11/12, 2016,  in Cologne, we would be pleased to receive your concise summary not later than June 15, 2015.

Call for Papers - VGB Conference Maintenance in Power Plants 2016

This biennial event is addressed to all experts of the conventional and nuclear division, to the experts of maintenance in power plants and service companies and to the independent inspectors and deputies of governments, who are concerned with new developments in the divisions maintenance, inspection and repair.

The deadline for submission of proposals is June 30, 2015.

BREF-LCP Process - Final Meeting of the Technical Working Group

From June 1 to 9, 2015, the final meeting of the Technical Working Group (TWG) for the revision of the "Best Available Techniques Reference Document"  (BREF) for Large Combustion Plants (LCP) will be held in Seville. As a member of the TWG VGB will also attend the final meeting for different chapters and topics. This will be done in close cooperation with the German BDEW and EURELECTRIC.

In preparation of the final meeting in Seville there was a preliminary talk on national level organized by the  German Federal Environment Agency on May 19, 2015. VGB also attended this meeting to represent the interests of its members.

The revision process for the BREF LCP started with the kick-off meeting in October 2011. In preparation of this meeting VGB bodies already revised the technical part of the document and made this available to the European IPPC Bureau (EIPPCB). The first draft of the new document was published by the EIPPCB in June 2013. It was examined and commented by the VGB/BDEW bodies and proposed changes were forwarded to Seville.

The EIPPCB needed almost two years for analyzing and evaluating about 8500 comments delivered by all TWG members including an informal intermediate meeting in June 2014. The background paper provided for the final TWG meeting have also been commented by the VGB/BDEW bodies and will be discussed at the final meeting in June.

The BREF LCP process can be followed in myVGB.
