VGB PowerTech Puts the Basic Terms of the Electric Utility Industry in a Nutshell

  • VGB-Standard for “one common language” in the electric utility industry
  • German and English version ready for free download

Current complex technical development in power generation and increasing diversification of the electricity markets create new terms and designations that are penetrating daily routines. All parties involved can only communicate exactly and effectively, if the terms used are unambiguous and defined accurately. This is the basis that is needed for successful and safe working and clear understanding among politics, authorities, the public as well as research and science.

The VGB-Standard “Basic Terms of the Electric Utility Industry“ –now ready for free download in English and German as PDF file – is aiming at speaking one common language.

VGB Statement: Analysis of the impact of reactive power supply on electrical components

For the delivery of ancillary services, voltage stability and reactive power, to the transmission network, among others generating plants / power plants are used.

For the determination of all reactive power-related expenses the respective investment share, stronger wear and the resulting maintenance as well operation expenses have to be considered.

In the VGB statement an overview on the evaluation of plant-specific shares of investment, maintenance and operation will be given. This includes results of the research projects “Investigation of wear mechanism caused by reactive power load change of generators” (Sensoplan) and “Wear of electrical components caused by reactive power supply” (Hochschule Ruhr-West).

The VGB Statement is available in German only.

Call for Papers - Steam Generators, Industrial and Cogeneration Plants 2016

The conference is planned as a colloquium, i.e. putting emphasis on discussion. In addition to the lectures, followed by discussion, individual expert discussions between lecturers and auditorium will be offered.

For the conference "Steam Generators, Industrial and Cogeneration Plants", which will take place on April 6/7, 2016, in Potsdam, Germany, we would be pleased to receive your concise summary not later than September 30, 2015.

Call for Papers - Steam Turbines and Operation of Steam Turbines 2016

The conference "Steam Turbines and Operation of Steam Turbines 2016" will take place on 8/9 June 2016 in Dresden, Germany . Aim of the conference is to ensure steam turbine operation on a high level of availability and efficiency also in the future.

This biennial event is addressing manufacturers, planners, operators, insurers and all experts interested in the technology and its framework like-, researchers and authorities.

Please submit your proposal for papers by October 30, 2015, at the latest.

VGB-S-219-00-2015-03-EN - Refractory Lining in Fluidised Bed Combustion Plant - Now available as eBook!

Refractory lining is an essential design element of steam generating plants with fluidised bed combustor. Economy and availability of fluidised bed combustion depends to a large degree on the quality and availability regarding service life and load following capacity of the refractory lining. Hence, it is obvious that this lining is, hence, to be manufactured, installed and operated with great care.

The VGB-Standard VGB-S-219-00-2015-03-EN offers suggestions for manufacturers and operators regarding design, ordering, procurement, materials supply, installation, drying, operation and maintenance. It intends to facilitate making clear agreements on the refractories and on requested services between the contract partners.

VGB PowerTech Journal 7 (2015): Maintenance and Service, Retrofit, Maintenance for Wind Power Plants, Utilisation of Biomass for Power and Heat Generation

Some topics of the July issue are: Increased process reliability by current data and information management in waste incineration plants (Hans Karl Preuss and Erich Böhm); Experiences with the combustion of dry lignite in unit K of the Niederaußem power plant (Rainer Hesse, Bernhard Röper and Daniel Sommer); Rotor hub: Potential for improvements – New battery management optimises wind turbine output, battery lifecycle and working capital (Heiko Jungermann and Ingo Wahlers); Torrefied Biomass: The perfect CO2 neutral coal substitute is maturing (Michael Wild)
