VGB Participates at EEC Events in New Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad

A major topic in India: Renewable energies and thermal power plants working together
Under the motto "Supercritical Generation and Integration with Renewables – Learnings from German Experiences", the Excellence Enhancement Centre (EEC) organised events in three locations in India from August 31 and September 4, 2015. At the opening conference in New Delhi, more than 150 participants discussed the technical challenges arising from the fluctuating power of renewable energies. VGB supported the series of events with various contributions.

On the occasion of the opening ceremony of the VGB Congress POWER PLANTS on September 9, 2015, the VGB Quality Award was rewarded for the ninth time.

The VGB Quality Award 2015 was awarded to Züblin Stahlbau GmbH, represented by Johannes Hauptenbuchner, and Claus Queck GmbH, represented by Franz-Werner Esser, for the supply and installation of steel structures for the 2 x 800 MW hard coal-fired power plant Eemshaven, Netherlands.

In July 2009, the consortium “Steinkohlekraftwerk Eemshaven” (Eemshaven hard coal-fired power plant) with the companies Claus Queck GmbH and Züblin Stahlbau GmbH were contracted for the delivery and assembly of structural steelwork comprising altogether 12,000 tons for the turbine houses, pipe and cable bridges, coal handling plant, gypsum disposal building and the biomass supply storage building for the new build. The assembly work for the Eemshaven power plant was successfully completed in September 2013.

VGB Innovation Award 2015 for Markus Rabensteiner (28) and Dr Martin Schiemann (34)

The VGB Research Foundation has awarded outstanding performance of young university graduates working in the field of power and heat generation for more than 30 years. For the first time in 2015, such achievement is honoured with the VGB Innovation Award.

The VGB Innovation Award 2015 was awarded in equal shares to Markus Rabensteiner (28), Graz, Austria, and Dr Martin Schiemann (34), Bochum. The award, endowed with a total of 10,000 €, was handed over by the VGB chairman on the occasion of the VGB Congress POWER PLANTS on September 9, 2015.

Call for Papers - Steam Generators, Industrial and Cogeneration Plants 2016

The conference is planned as a colloquium, i.e. putting emphasis on discussion. In addition to the lectures, followed by discussion, individual expert discussions between lecturers and auditorium will be offered.

For the conference "Steam Generators, Industrial and Cogeneration Plants", which will take place on April 6/7, 2016, in Potsdam, Germany, we would be pleased to receive your concise summary not later than October 15, 2015.

Call for Papers - Steam Turbines and Operation of Steam Turbines 2016

The conference "Steam Turbines and Operation of Steam Turbines 2016" will take place on 8/9 June 2016 in Dresden, Germany . Aim of the conference is to ensure steam turbine operation on a high level of availability and efficiency also in the future.

This biennial event is addressing manufacturers, planners, operators, insurers and all experts interested in the technology and its framework like researchers and authorities.

Please submit your proposal for papers by October 30, 2015, at the latest.

RESEARCH

Impacts on the Delivery of Control Power on Selected Components of the Water-steam-cycle

The results of the VGB-Research project „Wear investigation model for primary and secondary controlled thermal power plants of the ENTSO-E-grid” clearly show increased stress exposure for power plants. The increasing number of startup’s, shutdowns, steeper load gradients and more frequent load changes often lead to an operation beyond the original design.

For selected components of the water-steam cycle the impact on the lifetime (fatigue life) was studied based on detailed power plant and control models. Small and frequent load changes through primary and secondary control lead to an increased crack growth and possibly to failure of components. For turbine control valves a significantly reduction of life cycles was shown.

Joint Research Project “Partner Steam Power Plant” Completed

The joint research project “Partner Steam Power Plant” which was coordinated by VGB PowerTech and was founded under the COORETEC initiative was completed on 30 June 2015.

During the 22 months of working various studies on the subject of flexibilising a coal-fired power plant have been carried out successfully. The results of these studies will be published in the public report of the joint research project. This report will be elaborated until the end of 2015.

Furthermore essential results will be presented within the workshop “Flexible Power Plants for the Energiewende” in Berlin on 3 November 2015.
