Avoidance of generator damage resulting from condensation on live parts - Print

The moisture contained in gaseous substances condenses on impact with colder surfaces to a greater of lesser extent, depending on the ambient conditions and in particular on pressure and temperature. If this occurs in the area of non-insulated electrical connections inside the generator, it is hardly possible to avoid electrical faults. Several cases of damage to power plant generators with similar causes and developments resulting from condensation as outlined above have provided grounds for the VGB Project Group on Generators to analyse the causes and compile recommendations for action to avoid such damage in future.

This VGB Standard first defines the specific terms used and explains the mechanisms which can lead to condensation inside the generator. That information is used to produce recommendations of technical and organizational measures which can be adopted to avoid generator damage resulting from condensation.

This VGB Standard is based on a recommendation for action which was compiled by the Project Group (PG) on Generators in 2005. The PG Generators reviewed the contents of that recommendation in 2016 and the VGB Head Office has issued the results of that work in the form of a VGB-Standard.
